Golby thunderbolt salvages Millers a point.

Scott Hatley

A thunderbolt from centre back Glen Golby salvaged the Millers a point against Waltham Abbey at Capershots.

The centre half’s effort in the 61st minute levelled the match after Justin Gardner’s side fell behind early in the second half.

Before that Aveley took a fortuitous lead when Kyle Asante’s cross from the right looped over the head of the Abbey goalkeeper Matt Gill and in off the far post after 11 minutes.

But the lead wasn’t to last until half time after Ayrton Coley had the simple task of tapping home James Peagram’s cut back 15 minutes after Asante’s opener.

Aveley suffered an early blow in the second half when their centre half, Jay Leader, failed to re-emerge after the break suffering from an ankle problem.

And when Peagram broke the offside trap of the make-shift Millers defence inside the first 30 seconds of the half to put Abbey in front it only compounded Gardner’s misery.

That was until Golby got on the end of a poor clearance from the Abbey defence to lash home the equaliser, with his strike arching away from Gill and finding the top corner, giving Gill absolutely no chance.

Despite showing spirit to come from behind to rescue a point, it’s now a fourth game without a win for Justin Gardner’s side who are limping over the finish line this season.

But to their credit it has been an extremely energy sapping week for the Millers having played Harlow and Witham already this week and with Sudbury to come.

With that in mind it was somewhat surprising to see Gardner make just the two changes to the side that so heartbreakingly lost to Witham Town 48 hours earlier with Karl Blake and Adeyinka Cole coming in for Alfred Kamara and Brian Okwera.

And it was the undoubtedly leggy Aveley who made the better start, taking the lead just over 10 minutes into the match, albeit in fortuitous circumstances.

After an attack had broken down the ball found it’s way back to Cole who split the Abbey’s left back and centre half with a perfectly weighted ball into the run of Kyle Asante.

Asante played the ball first time into the area looking to pick out a team mate, only for the ball to loop over the head of Matt Gill and in off the far post for the game’s opening goal.

Player/Coach Anton Stephenson was in no doubt that Asante meant it, sticking to the “strikers union” but either way the Millers were in front.

But despite starting well Aveley were unable to consolidate their lead and were unfortunate not to double their advantage when a cross from Paul Burnett caused confusion in the box.

Christian Wheeler's sliced clearance went more up than forward tempting Gill off his line, but under the challenge of Michael Begg he was unable to claim the ball with Begg then attempting an overhead kick into an empty net.

Tuesday night’s goal-scorer though was unable to get a solid connection of his strike allowing Matt Bedford time to chest the ball down and clear off the line.

It was a chance that the Millers would regret missing as minutes later Abbey were level thanks to Aryton Coley’s equaliser midway through the first half.

Like Aveley’s goal earlier in the tie, there was more than a hint of fortune that lead to Abbey’s equaliser, with the first slice of luck coming when Adetayo Osifuwa’s attempted hack away deflected off James Peagram.

The ball looped up into the sky with Billy Holland attempting to clear at the second attempt only for him to also slice his clearance sending the ball back towards goal.

Peagram then beat Osifuwa to the ball, nicking it past him, before cutting the ball back for Coley to simply tap in to an empty net to send the two sides into the break level.

The second half started with a blow for Aveley as Jay Leader was unable to take to the field after suffering from an ankle problem picked up in the first half.

And to make matters worse the Millers' make-shift defence conceded within 30 seconds of the second half kicking off after the provider of their first goal scored Abbey's second.

Having beating the offside trap Peagram was through on goal with only the goalkeeper to beat, which he duly did drilling his effort into the bottom corner although Kalin Artakiev will feel he may have done better.

It was a terrible start for the Millers who now found themselves having to come from behind, but unlike Tuesday night’s defeat to Witham they had time on their side to find an equaliser.

But Abbey – much like Aveley in the first half – almost extended their grasp on the match with a chance for a third when Peagram beat Artakiev to a long ball forward.

The striker though was unable to get enough on the ball to get it over the line with Glen Golby smashing the ball out of the ground to save the Millers from going two behind.

And that wasn’t to be Golby’s biggest involvement in the match as with just over an hour played the centre half scored one of the best goals he is ever likely to score to bring Aveley level.

After the home side failed to clear a set piece from the Millers the ball fell to Golby on the edge of the area.

Without a moment’s hesitation the centre half put his foot through the ball sending it arching into the top corner giving Gill absolutely no chance.

As the game edged towards it’s conclusion the 2-2 score line looked a fair reflection of the evening's work between the two sides, but Abbey did manage to carve out two chances late on to nick it.

The first came after a short header back to Artakiev was latched upon by Coley only for the forward to drag his shot wide.

And in the last knockings of the match a goal mouth scramble was hurriedly cleared by the Aveley defence to ensure they didn’t suffer any more late drama as they had down earlier in the week.

Aveley: Kalin Artakiev, Adetayo Osifuwa, Karl Blake, Jay Leader (Brian Okwera 46’), Glen Golby, Mathias Bakare, Kyle Asante, Billy Holland (c), Michael Begg (Oyetunji Oyewale 72’), Paul Burnett, Adeyinka Cole (Josh Coulson 81’)
