Aveley 1 Hendon 2

Trevor Quantock

Two first half strikes from set-pieces were enough to give Hendon all three points at The Millfield.

Billy Dunn had a clear chance to open scoring for the visitors when he nipped in between Ryan Doyle and debutant Aveley keeper Ollie Morris-Sanders. With an open goal, on the angle, 12 yards out, the Hendon forward pulled his shot wide of the far post.

Doyle then had a chance to put Millers ahead when he met a Mitch Hahn corner but his effort was blocked on the line.

Hendon then scored their first goal in the 25th minute. Casey McLaren heading home from a corner. Five minutes later The Greens doubled their lead. A Scott Cousins free-kick on the right was knocked back across goal and Peter Dean nodded in from close range. Dunn soon had the opportunity to add to Hendon’s lead but his shot from the edge of the box found the side netting.

Nicky Symons then had a well struck shot on target which Hendon keeper, James Reading failed to hold. From the follow-up Aveley had several shots on target but all were blocked. The last action of the first half came when Junior Dadson hit the bar with a curling shot and the rebound was headed over.

Aveley got back into the game after 64 minutes when Dennis Tuohy tucked away a through ball. Tuohy immediately has a chance for his second but Reading foils him at the near post.

Aveley had much the better of the second half but Hendon still had their chances. Dean had a shot well saved by Ollie Morris-Sanders after 68 minutes.

A free-kick from Hahn was met by Symons whose header hit the post.

The Greens’ Bradley Thomas was sent off two minutes from time when he pulled down an Aveley forward when clear on goal 25 yards out.

Hendon hung on for the last few minutes to complete a double over the Millers this season.
