First Round Replay

Aveley Football Club

Millers led 3-0 but a dramatic comeback from Carshalton Athletic sets up Monday 16th December First Round Replay.

A brilliant performance from The Millers as we come so close to reaching the last 32, but at any level you need to finish your chances otherwise a team will punish you, and that's exactly what happened.

We started the game exceptionally against the Isthmian Premier League side as we took the game to them and probably caught them by surprise. Jonathan Nzengo had an effrot which went over the bar, Jason Raad was then also just over the bar from a 25 yard free-kick after Alex Akrofi was fouled. Alex Akrofi was then next to try his luck, but his effort whistled past the right hand post. George Sykes has been on fire for The Millers with nine goals in 12 games and you would've put your house on him to score as he went through one-on-one but he passed his effort wide of the post.

Finally, on 15 minutes, we got our deserved lead. Alex Akrofi had his legs swept from underneath him, Shad Ngandu stepped up and rolled the ball into the bottom right hand corner to put us infront. Carshalton 0-1 Aveley.

Three minutes later and we were in dreamland. A corner from Jason Raad was met by centre half Harry Gibbs who volleyed into the bottom right hand corner from the near post to double our lead. Carshalton 0-2 Aveley.

We almost made it 3-0 ten minutes later as Jason Raad and Alex Akrofi connected and led to the latter to attempt to bend his effort into the top left hand corner, but the keeper was on hand to make the save.

Our dominate performance led to Carshalton's player-manager to bring himself on to sort out The Robins performance as he received the ball deep and showed his quality spraying the ball around from left to right and right to left to get the ball moving quickly to attempt to drag Aveley players out of their positions.

We had a couple more chances near the end of the first half, George Sykes won the ball back looked to chip it across to Alex Akrofi but the keeper cut it out. George Sykes then  took it on himself to shoot at goal, but it was again, well saved by the keeper.

Half Time | Carshalton Athletic 0-2 Aveley.

We started the second half well too as Alex Akrofi had a difficult chance which he dragged wide with his left foot, moments later Shad Ngandu fired over the bar.

On 53 minutes, we made it 3-0 and many would've thought the game would be all but over. Brilliant piece of skill from Wyan Reid as he guided the bal lover a Carshalton players head, the ball then ended up wtih Jason Raad who managed to chip the ball over the on-rushing keeper, it looked like it was going wide, but the spin on the ball took it into the back of the net off the post. Carshalton 0-3 Aveley.

Only three minutes later and Harry Ottaway got the hosts back in the game, he looked top draw when he came on and he made all the difference for Carshalton when he came on at half time. We didn't clear the ball away, it broke to Ottaway who slammed the ball home into the bottom right hand corner of our goal. Carshalton 1-3 Aveley.

George Sykes then had two half chances as one was a header from a corner which just went wide of the right hand post, and the second the keeper made a comfortable save. Jason Raad stepped up to take a free-kick and his swirving effort cracked the crossbar which was a massive let off for the hosts and so unlucky for The Millers. We had three further chances which included two one-on-ones but we couldn't finish the game off.

With ten minutes to go, a worldie from Christie Pattisson pulled another goal back. 25-yards out, onto his right foot, curled it top bins. Carshalton 2-3 Aveley.

The sucker punch then came in the 96th minute of four minutes added on. As a foot left in allowed the hosts player to fall to the deck and the referee awarded the penalty. Up stepped Paris Hamilton-Downes who rather cooly and calmly slotted the penalty away to send the match to what will most certainly be an entertaining replay.
