Once again Len Matysiak from our long standing club sponsor Unite the Union have come up trumps. Not only sponsoring all 3 senior mens teams & the 1st XV warm up tshirts this season they have now taken care of the newest team at the club.
Avonmouth Ladies are extremly greatful to Len and his team at Unite for sponsoring a full set of new playing shirts.
Avonmouth Ladies were started back early last season after holding the annual Claire Evans Memorial Day in aid of St. Peter’s hospice.
Claire Evans has been noted as the catalyst for girls rugby at Avonmouth where she & a few other female members helped raise the profile of the sport amongst local schools.
Before she sadly passed away was among a number of local women who were training just for the fun of it at the club, Claire was no stranger to the sport and had previously played for Old Reds. Last season Avonmouth Ladies played in four fixtures securing their first ever win Vs Clevedon RFC. In the true spirit of the sport half a dozen of them put their hands up to help other local clubs out who didnt quite have the numbers to fill a side of their own.
With the success of the junior girls rugby at the club the Ladies are now seeing some girls who were the first junior girls now take part and play alongside them.
As with the junior girls Avonmouth Ladies will be playing in the clubs tradtioanl black and red hoop but will display a pink heart on the right hip with CE inside in honour of Claire.
They have 8 games scheduled for this upcoming season and are aiming to enter into the league system for the 2019-20 season.
We at Avonmouth are hugely grateful to all of our sponsors, without them grassroots rugby would certainly die off. The Ladies team would like to thank Len and Unite for their support and sponsoring the new shirts.
The Annual Claire Evans Memorial Match will be held at Barracks Lane on Friday 28th September in a game Vs Chew Valley Cats.
