Match Report - Dursley 2/3xv
By Mark Kelleher
A very happy start to the New Year!!!
3rd XV captains blog ... week 18 ... HAPPY NEW YEAR
The weather tried it's best to stop any rugby being played but luckily Dursley RFC had a pitch available and offered us a combined 2s and 3s friendly and what a game we had. We went with 19 players, including 3 new players who pulled on the red n black for the first time this season, but Dursley had enough for 2 full sides and subs!! Now I know how oppositions must feel when we turn up with 10+ replacements .... hopefully we will start having that again.
Dursley's side included a couple of 1st teamers, as did ours with Jordan Hendy and Josh Krupa pulling on a 3rd XV shirt for the first time this season and they both played as expected with Josh kicking the winning conversion at the death. Regular 2s Andy Bailey, Liam McGivern and Jake Brooker had their usual reliable games, with Jake picking up the man of the match award for his work around the park as well as a strong performance at prop, a position he is looking to build on at 1st team level and I'm sure he will do a great job.
The 3 new players who played were Andy Kimsey, who returns to the club after a few seasons playing elsewhere and managed to add another club when he volunteered to prop for Dursley in the first half as they wanted to go uncontested!! Brothers Ken and Kel Malala who have played for the 3s in the past, had their first outing this season and were strong in both attack and defence. Hopefully we can lure them away from the round ball game and take up egg chasing full time.
All the players mentioned above had great games as did the remaining forwards who scrapped for everything, they put in massive hits and carried through the gain line ... Mike Clarke, Steve Kenyon, Chris Jeanes, Kev McGivern, Tom Price and Bryn Hulbert who had another physical game scoring 2 unconverted tries, he continues to improve and deserves his starting place each week. The forwards set up attacking platforms for the backs who got to use good ball throughout the whole game. The backs included regulars Jack Hembrough, Viktor Farkas, Tom Tenner, Jason Lock and each one played an important role in our victory. All the backs moved the ball well, linked well and gained good yards. The ball was kicked into space at the right times and they put in tackle after tackle to ensure Dursley never out scored us.
We won the game 15-17 after being 10 down at half time, Dursley tried to out muscle us, they threw everything at us, they tried to be unsporting at the line out and they even supplied their own ref!! But we dug deep and never gave in, in fact we ended up wearing them down. We were constantly in their faces and played to the end, which eventually saw our No 8 wriggle and stretch over at the death to score his 7th of the season. This takes him back to the top of the try scoring charts while Pritch is recovering from his shoulder injury.
Stats time ...
We have now used 90 different players, including some 1s and 2s, but it's another week with fresh faces ... can we get to 100? ... can we get 4 teams out? ... can we encourage more players back??? I don't have the answers, but I do know it's been a pleasure to pull on the red n black with each and every one of you so far. I can truly say I love the enthusiasm that's being shown by new and old players and I'm looking forward to the rest of the season.
More stats ....
our total tries scored so far is 58 ... total conversions kicked is 34 ... total penalties kicked is 3 ... this gives us a points total of 367 and 251 against.
We have played a total of 16 games winning 12 ... 4 of these games were league games and we won all 4.
This Saturday we have BAC at home, please make an effort to be available for any side and possibly train on Thursday.
Keep up the good work boys.
3rd XV captain and technically the top try scorer in the 3s .... again!!!
