Avonvale Backs shine against Mid Summer Norton

A great all around team performance
Down to bare numbers due to unforeseen circumstance, forcing players to play out of position was not the best preparation for a tough match. However, it proved to be one of the best performances of the season for all around team play and the backs being particularly sparkling.
The first quarter was equally contested with MSN in our faces stifling out our attacks ,but they gave away too many penalties and eventually one was kickable and the wise decision was for Nye to convert it into 3 points. This was followed by strong attacks from MSN which lead to a defiant defence of our line, where we eventually manage to turn over a ball and work our way out of danger.
Two great attacks followed with Cameron cutting into space and looked certain to score, but a great defensive tackle saw him stopped inches from the line. The ball moved across from right to left and again Cam cut through only to be stopped again, but on the third attack he beat the defence to score close to the posts and Nye duly converted. From the kick off we gained territory with Josh breaking the gain line with super driving runs ending in a scrum a few metres out from the try line where scrum half Will Sayers saw a gap and scampered through to score behind the posts for a converted try.Thereafter, the play was all MSN's as they worked hard to get back into the game and had the upper hand for several minutes and we were glad to hear the half time whistle with a lead of 17 - 0.
The second half again started with MSN dominant and it was our turn, under pressure, to give away too many penalties, but Charlie at the front of the line began to steal their ball, negating their advantage. Our backs always looked dangerous but they then turned on a breath taking performance, great control from Nye and Will Andrews had the skill to spot the space with Gabe was running powerful and accurate lines, with excellent support from Cam and Zac, until eventually Will A worked some magic and Gabe turned it into a score. There was more to come as Will A created a small gap for Gabe to burst through at pace and a long run to the try line. A conversion earned the final points of the match.
It was a game of so many fine performance that you would have to mention everyone on the team, but for the coaches the outstanding performance was the team, who played with the familiarity that can only be developed by training together. It was not perfect and the are areas we need to work on but it was thoroughly satisfying.
