A long and challenging day in glorious conditions at a well run Mid Norton festival saw Avonvale win 3 and lose 3 matches all in.
An increase to a 10 man squad this week saw an excellent start against a strong Chew side, with a 2-0 defeat reflecting their better organisation through to the end of the match. Vale continued to play high tempo rugby in the next against Walcot eventually easing ahead for a 2-1 victory. After that came the fall with a 6-1 defeat at the hands of an excellent Chew side who played intelligent rugby to exploit Vale's weaknesses. A spirited recovery towards the end showed that with better organisation and some smarter plays it could have been closer.
The team identified the ways they needed to improve and restored their pride with a strong outing against Frome, losing 1-0 but feeling buoyed by the massive improvement in their play. The final 2 games continued on that platform with solid 2-0 and 2-1 victories against Walcot and Castle Carey.
The boys are coping remarkably with the unsettling nature of borrowing several players for each game but with hopes of improving squad numbers in the next few weeks, we are optimistic that we will reap the rewards. No award today as the parents found it too hard to decide, so many outstanding performances were seen.
