Avonvale Colts through to Semi Final of D&W cup

Incredibly hard game with two well matched sides
This was not a game for the faint hearted with two very well matched sides giving their all in the close fought competition. Sherbourne started the better with well drilled attacks from forwards and backs, but the Avonvale defence was sound and eventually our line speed put sufficient pressure to turn over the ball and enabled us to mount attacks of our own. The Sherbourne defence was equally as good, winning the ball back. For the first 20 minutes both sides equaled each other out, with some huge tackles that made the spectators gasp but eventually a missed tackle let the Sherbourne wing through to score an unconverted try in the corner. From the restart Avonvale worked their way into the red zone and battered away at the Sherboune defence both narrow and wide, at times inches from the try line, but to no avail as the defence was very sound and they managed to clear the danger. Avonvale mounted another attack down the left wing and this time there was just sufficient space for Sam to score in the corner making it 5 points apiece,
The second half started in much the same way with Sherbourne first to get into the red zone but we thought we had all the space covered but were not prepared for the power of the Sherbourne 7 who bounced our tackler out of the way to score a well deserved try in the corner which they were unable to convert. Again Avonvale were playing catch up and this time the forwards started to make ground with hard running and quick recycled ball for our 8 to eventually bash his way over the line, which Will Andrews converted, so we took the lead for the first time at 12-10.
Shortly after we launched another attack only for the the splendid Sherbourne 7 to put in a huge hit on our 10 that took him some minutes to get this breath back. Again it was full blooded attack and defence which was exhausting for the coaches and spectators let alone the players. With a couple of minutes to go Will Able at 10 got his revenge by wrong footing the defence and scored and Will Andrews converted. Again Sherbourne put everything into the attack but we managed to fend off until the final whistle.
This was the best team performance from Avonvale Colts this year and almost impossible to pick out individuals and the whole pack were fantastic with controlled hard running and support and intelligent play and sound defence from the backs
