Avonvale Colts introduce U16s into Colts rugby
By Moz Hall
Experience won the day over a youthful Chippenham Academy side
It was not the best preparation as the venue was moved from pitch to pitch following an injury in a girls match finally ending on Chippenham's 3rd team pitch with a delay in KO. As Chippenham were fielding an Academy side it was an opportunity for us to introduce a handful of U16's to give them experience of colts rugby all of them younger brothers of colts or senior players. Avonvale quickly got into stride playing patterns in our more experienced midfield backs and quickly started to rattle up scores and Oj's calm kicking converted most into 7 points. We did not have everything our own way as Chippenham won the battle of the breakdown with excellent counter rucking and our lineout did not function well , not surprisingly as we introduced new jumpers who had not gone up before.
Avonvale fell asleep in the second half with good play not being fully executed to make thescore and on one occasion creating the space and then giving a pass that was intercepted for a Chippenham score. This was disappointing as were were far too casual , held on to the ball too long which would not do in a league game. Chippenham played well never gave up and scored another try and the second half ended 14 points apiece. Next year Chippenham will be a side to watch out for as they improve with experience.
The young lads brought into the side played well and hopefully enjoyed the experience and one of them Dids Kettlety playing 7 watched by his older brother, normally featuring in our front row, was man of the match.
