Alan Bateson reports on a hard fought win for Brig at Ramsbottom Utd.

Bamber Bridge returned from The Harry Williams Stadium with all three points on Saturday afternoon following a close and sometimes fraught encounter with Ramsbottom United.

Following a 5 minute delay due to a problem with the goal nets, Bamber Bridge started the brighter of the two teams and almost took the lead in the 8th minute. Regan Linney cutting in from the left and striking a great effort that the home keeper tipped over the bar for a corner. The game then became somewhat scrappy for a 10 minute spell following this early chance with neither side getting on top.

Brig gradually began to take control and where trying to play the ball on the ground on a very damp pitch, the long grass not really helping. In the 20th Minute from a Brig corner, Danny Forbes got in a powerful downward header which beat the keeper but was cleared off the goal-line.

With Brig now creating all the chances it was Regan Linney who again tested the home keeper with another fine shot from distance, this time the keeper diving to his left to push the ball passed the post. Moments Later, Ali Waddecar found space in the area but his shot from 10 yards was blocked. In the dying moments of the half, Waddecar again came close this time side stepping the defender before hitting a rasping drive that just flew wide of the keepers left hand post.

The second half started just as the first had ended with Bamber Bridge racing on to the attack, Regan Linney picked up the ball on the right hand side of the penalty area, cut inside and fired in another great strike which, once again was blocked in front of the goal-line.

Moments later and Ali Waddecar again came close as he connected well with a right wing cross only to see it deflected over the bar for corner. Brig were now piling on the pressure but where almost caught out as Rammy clipped the cross bar with a 30 yard free kick.

On 58 minutes Brig made their first change of the game, James Boyd replacing Matt Dudley, Brig continued to press and Brad Carsley was unlucky as he burst down the left wing before a low shot across goal that just beat the far post.

Rammy responded and on 63 minutes looked to have taken the lead only for the linesman's flag to come to the visitors’ rescue. Brig made a further change on 65 minutes with Jamie Milligan replacing Regan Linney. It was Milligan who moments later provided a superb cross from the right that was met by the head of Ali Waddecar punched clear by the home keeper. With the game now opening up Ramsbottom again threatened, this time a 20 yard effort flashing just wide of Lloyd Rigby’s right hand post.

The breakthrough arrived on 75 minutes, Ali Waddecar with a driving run down the left in to the penalty area, got in front of the defender and laid the ball back perfectly for James Boyd, who calmly controlled the ball before smashing it home from 8 yards, much to the delight of his teammates and the Brig fans behind the goal.

Far from sitting on the lead Brig poured forward and Jamie Milligan was unlucky with a great strike which the keeper once again tipped over the bar for a corner. With the clock ticking towards 90 minutes, Brig made their final substitution as Chris Marlow replaced Ali Waddecar. The referee saw fit to add on 5 minutes of stoppage time. Brig survived a nervy moment when Rammy where awarded a free kick 30 yards out but the effort sailed well wide of the post and Brig were able to see out the remaining moments for a much deserved victory and a well earned 3 points that takes them up to 2nd in the league table.
