Bamville v Wheathampstead CC
By David Wormald
The walkover that nearly wasn’t...
The day after the hottest day of the year brought sun, high cloud, a pleasant breeze and a colts side of U15s from Wheathampstead. Batting first they struggled to make runs and kept losing wickets despite Bamville’s best efforts at gentlemanly bowling. Wisely, their coach put himself in at No8 and racked up 62 before Lewis, who up until then had in no way looked like the fielder of the year he usually aspires to be, took a fine running catch in the most uneven and overgrown part of the outfield and effectively brought the innings to a close. After a fine biryani (thanks Shaz A) the men of Bamville went out and themselves struggled embarrassingly with the bat until Lewis and Josh came together at 8 and 9 to spare our blushes but not before even Jeff was forced to strap on his pads and go out.
On a personal note this game might just mark the end of your author’s playing career. Partly because he now has a perfect bowling record for the season of 0.1, 0, 1, 0 and partly because he sustained a in swinging Yorker to the foot and a fractured metatarsal. To add insult to injury he was given out lbw to the ball that broke him. It’s a cruel game.
