Sport is a subjective topic. Very much based on the individual point of view (that would be both figuratively and practically-no benefit of multiple TV angles, slowmo or expert opinion on a Sunday) Report from a Bancroft perspective - no offence intended.

What a cracker to blow the Christmas cobwebs away after an extended layoff.

Our friends at Essex RFU had decreed that the first Sunday back after Christmas was to be a Cup round and so we all came out blinking and yawning into the new year sunlight - all a bit of a shock to the system to be honest (Fair play to Brentwood B's - it was tough enough for us to get up and to the home game but they had an earlier alarm call than we did)

So, it was, prehaps, more in trepidation than with any sort of confidence that we kicked off for our cup game against Brentwood B's....and what a surprising treat we had in store.

looking at teams Bancroft had the edge on size overall and Brentwood were certainly looking at moving the ball and running as much as they could. Brentwood took lead twice in the first half and Bancroft had to equalise each time through Theo & Lewis.

It was a bright day but there was an awful gusty/ swirling wind that made it pretty much impossible for the kickers - No conversions on the day although both kickers got frustratingly close.

Second half saw a distinct change in the game play from both sides - where Bancroft were dominating the scrum in the first half the Brentwood coach worked his magic at half time and the scrums were a different story in the second half - to be fair Brentwood had us all ends up at the scrum in the second half and clean ball was at a premium. That said Bancroft started opening up the running game and were moving the ball a lot more. Bancroft edged in front from the first time with a try by Benedict. Brentwood naturally equalised. Try from Louis got Bancroft back in front. There was then a frenzied period of attack/ defence from both sides - two equally matched teams giving everything they had - brilliant viewing. Fortunately from Bancroft's point of view we got the break and managed to score a try through Jordan to get clear water between the teams for the first time.

From talking with the Brentwood guys their players had been back at School already and had School rugby on the 6/1/18 - ours were still wedged in front of the X-box stuffing the selection boxes - on that basis it was not surprising that Brentwood hit the ground running at the start but Bancroft finished with a bit more go at the end - on the day that was probably the difference between two very well matched teams.

Simple stats - 25-15 - scoring went as follows:
First Half - 11.11am 0-5, 11.16am 5-5, 11.18am 5-10, 11.24am 10-10,
Second Half - 11.40am 15-10, 11.50am 15-15, 11.53am 20-15, 12noon 25-15.

Brentwood A's played Southend in the cup and managed to win 17-15: that means we will be entertaining Southend at Home in the next round of the cup. Got to admit it's with a hint of regret we won't be able to host Brentwood A's in cup after this hugely entertaining game with the Brentwood B's.
