Barkingside won a tight derby-match 1-0 with former landlords Redbridge at Cricklefields on Monday night.

Visitors Redbridge started the game well with Nicholas Brown putting in a dangerous cross that ‘Side’s defence managed to scrap clear.

George Winn had ‘Side’s first chance of the game, as the defender’s long-range effort forced Redbridge keeper Calllum Chafer into a low save.

Sam Edwards, the match-winner from Saturday’s home clash with Barking then saw an effort from over 30 yards go wide as the hosts begun to grow into the game.

Redbridge were creating chances of their own, as Nathan Gordon shot over after a mazy run whilst Laste Dombaxe tested Jack Francis with a low drive from outside the box. Francis was then called into action again when he denied Aaron Gordon who was through one-on-one.

‘Side won a penalty just before the break when midfielder Sam Konway was fouled inside the box by Joel Griffiths. Referee Joseph Gray correctly pointing to the spot. Jason Fontaine stepped up but saw his spot-kick brilliantly tipped wide by Chafer down at his left.

From the resulting corner, Chafter made a brilliant double-save. First the keeper kept out a header from Leon Smith from close range before seconds later keeping out a volley from Fontaine that looked destined for the top-corner.

If Gus Gulfer was frustrated his side didn’t go into half-time ahead, his frustration wouldn’t have lasted long as ‘Side took the lead nine minutes after the restart.

Skipper Paul Wright’s excellent delivery from a corner was matched with a brilliant header from Edwards that gave Chafer no chance. It was the midfielder’s second goal in two games, following the aforementioned winner against Barking and everyone at the club hopes more will follow.

Michael Ademiluji then saw a low shot go narrowly wide before Fontaine and Konway shot over as Gulfer’s men looked to double their lead.

Nathan Gordon though was still looking a threat for Redbridge and the former Ilford striker shot over with 15 minutes remaining. With time running out Gulfer made changes with Joshua George and Ivan Vungo coming on to bolster the defence.

Forward Kerkstun MacPherson nearly though made it 2-0 for ‘Side in the dying minutes of the game, but his effort, when through on goal, struck Chafer in the face and was kept out. The keeper thankfully after treatment got back up and finished the match.

Overall a good result for ‘Side who on the back of three consecutive wins, will be feeling confident going into Saturday’s FA Cup match away to Haringey Borough of the Ryman North.

‘Side: Jack Francis, Leon Smith, George Winn, Paul Wright, Maxell Amoako, George Lutaaya, Michael Ademililyu, Sam Edwards, Jason Fontaine (Joshua George), Sam Konway (Ivan Vungbo), Kerkstun MacPherson
