Barkingside ended their season on Saturday with a 4-2 win over Enfield 1893.

David Laird (2), Jakub Berkowicz and Jason Fontaine bagged the goals in an entertaining clash at Cricklefields

‘Side took the lead on eight minutes through the prolific Laird. The striker’s powerful left-footed shot from outside the box gave Dylan Wicker in goal for Enfield no chance. It was the hitman’s 19th goal of the season.

The visitors responded well and two minutes were level. Miguel Lopes De Matos put in a great cross which found forward Khadean Campell in the area and he prodded the ball past Tyler McCarthy to score.

After the teams went into half-time level, ‘Side came out of the blocks well at the restart and won a penalty on 48 minutes. The tireless Marvin Birch was fouled in the area and Laird stepped up to drive home the resulting spot-kick home for his 20th goal of the season.

As well as putting ‘Side back in the lead, that strike earned Laird the club’s top-scorer of the season, putting him one ahead of his strike partner Luke With.

Enfield, as they did in the first-period, responded and were level soon after. De Matos slotting home after Lee Pleasance had seen a shot cleared off the line. With the scores now at 2-2, this really was anyone’s game to win.

The talented Berkowicz has enjoyed a fine time on-loan from Dagenham & Redbridge. On 66 minutes the winger put ‘Side in the lead for a third time, finishing well after a great pass from fellow Dagger loanee Scott Mitchell.

There was to be no response from Enfield this time and ten minutes from time Jason Fontaine scored ‘Side’s 81st and final league goal of the season. to wrap up a 4-2 win.

Both sides would finish the game with 10 men as Birch saw red on 82 minutes for the hosts before James Briggs was dismissed three minutes from time.

The win secured Gus Gulfer's side a 10th place finish in the Essex Senior League table.

The club would like to thank all involved for their efforts this season and wish everyone a good summer, before pre-season starts again ahead of the new 2017/18 season.
