Barkingside advanced to the next round of the FA Vase after defeating ESL rivals Southend Manor 2-1 at Cricklefields.

The first chance of the game fell to Manor from a corner only for Joe Skeels, at the back post, to head the ball into the side netting.

‘Side took the lead through Jason Fontaine who headed in a good cross from Michael Ogboin on 10 minutes. It was a simple header at the back post for forward Fontaine who now has three goals to his name this season.

Skeels then missed another chance for the visitors, this time heading a free-header wide of the post much to Will Hunt’s relief in goal for ‘Side.

Ogboin started the game in style and he came close to making it a 2-0 lead for ‘Side but saw a shot fired over before a second effort was deflected wide.

Manor then had a penalty appeal turned down when Micky Hopkins went down in the box, but the officials waved away the appeal.

With the wind picking up ‘Side had a good end to the half but couldn’t double the lead. Mattheus Santos and Raphael Dyuile both forced Manor keeper Liam Pitts into saves.

‘Side finally doubled their lead on 54 mins when Ogboin finally got the goal his performance deserved. After being put through the forward coolly rounded Pitts in goal before slotting the ball in.

With time running out Manor then came back into the game as Hopkins and then John-Jo Slater missed chances. Tony Cookey then lobbed over for ‘Side before Manor pressured the hosts again.

In the 92nd minute substitute Reece Fatt grabbed Manor a lifeline when he headed home at the far-post. There was still time left for Hunt to make a great save to secure the win for ‘Side who now host Whitton United in the next round at home.
