Barkingside fell to a 3-1 defeat at home to promotion-chasing Hullbridge Sports, in an entertaining Monday night clash at Cricklefields.

Both teams started well with few chances inside the opening ten minutes. Mario Gjini seeing an effort easily saved by Hullbridge stopper James Pellin.

For the visitors, good play by Luke Hornsley picked out Nathan Scarborough through one-on-one but the forward saw his weak effort saved by Ryan Karrer in goal. Soon after forward Hornsley saw header ruled out correctly for offside.

Just after the half-hour Pellin was fortunate not to have been sent-off after he came out of his box and clattered one of 'Side's strikers. Referee Chris Cooper handing the keeper a booking.

Whilst the free-kick came to nothing, shortly after 'Side almost went ahead when good play by David Hornsby fed in Joe Oates. The in-form winger narrowly blazed a powerful strike over, with Hornsby forcing Pellin into a save a minute later.

On 38 minutes Hullbridge were awarded a penalty, as midfielder Emmanuel Okunja was felled in the area. Adebola Sotoyinbo stepping up to convert the resulting spot-kick, stroking the ball past goalkeeper Karrer's left and into the net.

In the final minutes of the half, Hullbridge almost went 2-0 up but saw a goal-bound header cleared off the line before ‘Side forward Gjini dragged a shot wide, after going past two defenders.

The visitors would go 2-0 up four minutes into the second-hand much to the delight of their manager Darren Manning. A peach of a cross by full-back Matt Rose was clinically headed in by Jimmy Cox. The experienced forward did hurt himself in scoring and was replaced by Dan Okah.

Hullbridge were now bossing the game and Sotoyinbo was unlucky not to grab his second of the match, seeing an effort cleared off the line as 'Side fought hard not to fall further behind.

On 80 minutes Scarborough would make it 3-0, finishing neatly from close-range, to wrap up the points for Manning's promotion-chasers.

'Side would grab a consolation through Shaiquan Maisara on 84 minutes, who slotted home well in the area past Pellin. It was the defender's first goal for the club on his 10th appearance.

The defeat leaves Alex Goldstone's Sky Blues bottom of the table, still two points behind 19th placed Leyton. 'Side are next in action on Saturday when they host Sawbridgeworth Town at Cricklefields. Kick-off for that match is at 3pm.

'Side: Ryan Karrer, Frederico Hernandez, Akwasi Marfo, Dan Jones, Edward Lang (Harry Matthews), Derek O'Halem, Joe Oates, David Ottley, Mario Gjini, David Hornsby (George Woodward), Isaac Marfo (Shaiquan Maisara)
