Home Draw With Leyton

Barkingside shared a 2-2 draw at home with fellow strugglers Leyton Athletic at Cricklefields.

With this match being the very definition of a relegation six-pointer, it was no surprise that the game got off to a cagey start, as neither team looking to give away an inch.

Leyton took the lead on 20 minutes through Rijorn Tuitt. The forward having the simple task of tapping the ball into an unguarded net after David Ottley failed to head a long-ball back to keeper Ryan Karrer, who had come out to collect the ball.

It was a poor goal to concede but worse was to follow as Leyton would double their lead on 34 minutes. Abdul Bangura lashing home a strike into the bottom corner, after the hosts failed to clear the ball.

Experienced keeper Ryan Karrer then made some great saves to keep 'Side only 2-0 down, before giving away a penalty on 42 minutes after being adjudged to have fouled forward Tuitt by the officials. The keeper recieving a yellow card.

In 'Side's previous league game at home to Tower Hamlets, Karrer had saved a first-half penalty. Perhaps that played into the mind of Tuitt, who fired his spot-kick high over the bar.

It was the turning point of the match, and a touch of good-fortune that 'Side hadn't perhaps received earlier in the season. A minute before half-time, 'Side reduced the arrears through the in-form Joe Oates, who fired home inside the area.

Instead of going into the break 3-0 down, 'Side were now back in the game and now again had a chance to take at least a point from the game. Karrer started the second-half by making another smart save, but inevitably the hosts would equalise on 64 minutes.

After Leyton had fired a free-kick wide, Alex Goldstone's men went up the other end and after a great team-move captain Harry Matthews was left with the task of prodding the ball home. It was his first goal of the season and a timely one at that.

Incredibly that was to be the final goal of the game. 'Side forced Leyton keeper Callum Lynskey into some fine saves, with there being plenty of brave defending from both sides in their own area. The woodwork was struck late on though as a mis-hit cross from the hosts hit the bar, with the rebound being lashed over.

In conclusion, whilst a point probably wasn't what 'Side would have wanted, it was a welcome one and showed the character that this team have shown in recent weeks.

The result leaves Goldstone's Sky Blues still three points behind 19th placed Leyton at the bottom of the table, and eight points behind 18th placed Tower Hamlets.

'Side are back in action next away to ESL leaders Stansted on Saturday 19th January. Kick-off for that match at Hargrave Park is at 3pm.
