Barkingside produced a stunning second half comeback from two goals down to claim all three points.

Goals from John Bricknell and Steve Carvell (2) maintained ‘Side’s 100% record at Cricklefields Stadium.

In a very poor first half for ‘Side, Cheshunt keeper Glenn Williamson was rarely troubled. Disaster struck on 19 minutes when an error from Tim Pitman, in for the suspended Chris Clarke, allowed a soft effort from Cheshunt’s Joshua Fagbahun to trickle into the net.

Pitman maybe suffering from a lack of match fitness was never commanding between the posts in the first half, that said their was little he could do about Cheshunt’s second two minutes later – Anthony Anstead with a screamer of a left foot strike from 25 yards out. The Barkingside defence were guilty of allowing Anstead the time and space to have a go. No defender closed or attacked space, it was in short – too easy.

‘Side now having to regroup drew the biggest noise from the crowd when a Gulfer corner fizzed close to the keeper who had to claim well, nobody could get on the end of it. Soon after Steve Carvell’s effort in the box was blocked by Cheshunt defender Anton Blackwood who slid in well to put the ball wide.

A series of defensive shambles almost saw Cheshunt extend their lead. Dan Callaway’s sliced clearance put the home side under pressure and produced some ping pong in the box and Side felt themselves lucky to get a way with it when the ball went wide. Barkingside were being too easily carved open.

Richard Oxby had ‘Side’s best chance of the half on 37 minutes. Clean through 20 yards out, but with the keeper approaching and the goal at his mercy he failed to find even the target.

Barkingside were a different team after the break, Lewis Francis’ close range effort that had to be well saved by Williamson was an indication of things to come. And come it did when Joe Ellul’s header across the right of the six yard box was nodded in low by Danny Callaway on 56 minutes.

Steve Carvell’s attempted lob from 20 yards out went over the bar before a good worked goal levelled things for Side approaching the hour mark; A lovely display of pass and move was finished off by Carvell from a John Bricknell cross inside the box. On 70 minutes Carvell grabbed his second heading home a Jason Fontaine cross.

Side should have made sure of the win late on when substitutes Dan Jones and Chris Taylor combined but Taylor’s effort went close but over the bar. In stoppage time Lewis Francis should have also added a fourth goal but his strike was saved.
