Saturday we faced Hampton at our home ground. Its a home ground for both of us so we knew there would be no advantage and having moved the game indoors, we were relieved to see it raining outside!
We had a different combination in attack this week and not our usual line up so went into the game with good intentions to work the ball into attack with steadiness and play the ball around the circle edge. Unfortunately, we couldn't get the ball into the circle with ease as i was restricted with my movement at GS by the strong GK, and with the attacking circle not at its full flow, we suddenly found ourselves 9-2 down. With a quick injury time out, we moved Debbie into shoot and pulled back the quarter but were still down 8-12 after first quarter.
Second quarter saw Nat move to GA and Debbie stay at GS , the ball moved through the court in attack and feeds were going well into the circle but their GS was extremely accurate at the other end so they were matching us goal for goal. Colyn arrived half way through the second quarter which was a relief for us all. We won second quarter 12-11 and moved into the 3rd down by 3.
With a less than impressive umpire at one end calling next to nothing, we tried our best against some contacting Hampton defence in the circle but luck wasn't on our side and we lost the quarter 9-11. Their GA was injured so they moved two tall shooters into the circle which seemed effective for them for a while.
Moving into the last quarter down by 5, coaches words were "forget the score, focus on the process" - he could not have been more right and the last quarter was absolutely epic. With a quick swap for Gemma to C and Mia to WA, we moved the ball through the attack and into goal with ease . With turnovers from defence coming at a rapid rate, we knew we had to get the goals in our end and we scored 4 goals on the trot with a few minutes to go. With coach shouting , you must convert on every single one of their Centre passes, the pressure was rising!
After an amazing tip by Sadie at WD edge of circle into Pippas hands , we knew we just need a few more turnovers - we converted this to a goal with amazing shooting accuracy from both shooters and when the final whistle went, we found we had won the game by two goals! 44-42 end score.
Unbelievable effort from everyone in that last quarter to keep going and push for the win. We showed immense team work, did a job and got the result. Well done everyone! We will be buzzing off that performance for a while!
