Barnsley RUFC Midi, Mini & Junior Section
Welcome to the Barnsley rugby union football club junior section.
The RFU’s core values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship are five great reasons to get involved with rugby, they are what makes rugby union so special and we are here to help you get started.
Midi rugby starts for children from 3 years upwards.
Children age 3,4 and 5 will start with basic ball handling and running skills using fun games and as the season progresses they will learn how to play “tag rugby”. The most important thing is that they have fun and learn to play the game safely and in the right spirit. They do not play competitive games until they reach their 6th Birthday. Once they are six they can join the under 7’s tram and play competitive games. They train on Sunday mornings 9:30 – 11:00 and all games are played on Sunday mornings from 11.00am kick offs. There will be some travel involved when they have away games. Fixtures can be found under each section on the website, and our face book page.
Children attending these sessions needs to be able to listen and join in with a group. We ask that they wear trainers of football/rugby boots and either shorts or tracksuits depending on weather conditions. In cold weather please make sure they have several layers and a hat. They may also get muddy so a change of clothes may be required before traveling home in the car! Its also a good ides to bring a non fizzy drink to keep them hydrated.
We suggest they have a 2-3 week trial to see if they enjoy the sessions before making a commitment to join.
They train from September to the end of April at Barnsley rugby club. If you are interested please turn up at a session or contact Angie 07939 258133
Parental help is always required, this may involve helping set up the equipment and putting it away or collecting subs. If you want to be more involved in the game why not help running the touch line or priding first aid. We also need coaches and referees to help run the minis and junior sections. Without this help we would not shrive. If you are interested please ask any of the coaches or contact the club directly. We encourage parents interested to take up coaching courses, if your son or daughter enjoys rugby why not got more involved than standing on the side lines.
Mini rugby starts from Under 6 to Under 12's. We follow the RFU continuum under which the game is introduced in stages, this can be viewed at rfu.com/newrulesofplay.
A player’s age on the 1st September will decide which age group they are allocated to. Mixed age groups are not allowed unless special dispensations have been granted by the RFU.
The club has a thriving junior section with Under 13’s, 14’s, 15’s. training Wednesday evening 7.00pm to 8.00pm and one girls team, training Monday evening 6.30pm to 7.30pm. Please see individual team details for specific times.
Training will include warm up, fitness, set plays and general rugby skills and tactics.
Games are played on Sunday mornings either at the club or at other local clubs for away fixtures. Start times do vary depending upon pitch availability at some clubs; it is usually 11am kick off. Details of fixtures can be found on each team’s web pages on www.pitchero.com
The club has excellent training and social facilities, parents/families are encouraged to become members.
All players need to be registered with both the club and the RFU for insurance purposes.
We have 2 full size rugby pitches and flood lit training is also available on all-weather Astroturf and the second team pitch.
Each junior team has access to clean and secure changing facilities with showers. The younger teams will have access to showers once able to change without assistance due to safeguarding rules.
