Barnsley succumbed to a heavy defeat at the hands of a very in form West Leeds team. The 52-0 score line is a fair reflection of the game as West Leeds where stronger in every area of the game.
Their set pieces very solid and their execution clean. There wasn’t much Barnsley could do in the face of this but to give it their all.
What the travelling Shaw Lane outfit didn’t lack was character and will. Yes they were outplayed by a very efficient side who always looked dangerous on the ball, but the majority of the Barnsley team put their hand up in the face of adversity. Seasoned vets Hobson and Reed gave their best to carry their team forward, often being battered and bruised by the home defence, but they carried on throughout.
The defence of the Barnsley back line was found wanting against arguably the best backline in the league, but Parker, Appleyard, Smith and Colbridge also gave their all.
There is very little else to say in terms of a report. Sometimes the score speaks for itself, and on the occasion this is true. West Leeds scored a lot of points and Barnsley didn’t score any. West Leeds will win the league and go to Twickenham in the senior vase with an eye on winning the competition and all the best to them.
For the Barnsley outfit there is absolutely no question that the fight is there, the desire to pick yourself up and try again when you get knocked down and with a few lads hopefully to return in the coming weeks hopefully the season can have a better end to it.
