The Reds win their first game of the 2024/25 season

The Reds won their first game of the 2024/25 season in style away at Lindum 4ths with a hard fought 3 – 1 win. The week leading to the game saw the standard selection headaches of how many the team would field, it varied from 9 to 13 and then eventually settled at 12 which meant the luxury of a sub.

After the first two matches scoring just one goal and shipping 12 it can hardly be said that the Reds went into the match flowing with confidence, but the line up did boast the legendry center half partnership of Kieran Ryan and veteran Ian Massey, the latter making his first appearance of the league season. Lindum 4ths were of course the team that Barnsley beat to the title the season before, and another tough encounter was expected. Right from the off Barnsley seized the initiative and were on the front foot which was a marked contrast to the previous two matches. Possession was much higher for Barnsley than previous weeks and it came as little surprise when Barnsley took the lead for the first time this season courtesy of who else Connor Massey who got the faintest of touches from Tim Lloyds' pass into the D.

There was a brief discussion between umpires to allow the goal but thankfully the goal stood. The rest of the first half continued with Barnsley largely in the ascendency but without adding to the score. At the other end Lindum did pose a threat but thus far hadn’t created a chance where it felt they should have scored.

At half time the Reds held their slender lead and knew that the next goal would be huge. Could the Reds score another or were Lindum going to come out a different outfit than the first half.

The second half saw Barnsley continue to pose a threat, Barnsley then won a short corner which culminated in another, the second resulted in the all important second goal, this time from Rob McCarthy's shot went straight in, aided by Chris Shaw's presence in front of the goal keeper. The game though was far from won, and Lindum were now having more possession and were winning short corner after short corner, Lindum reduced the deficit from a deflection from the P spot leaving keeper Humphries with no chance. With around ten minutes to go, the game was well and truly in the balance.

With a few minutes to go the Reds won a short of their own, Chris Shaw had a shot which was saved, Lloyd followed up but Lindum cleared on the line, only or that man Massey to slap the ball in mid air from close range to surely take the points back to South Yorkshire.

Alas, the match finished to wild scenes of celebration from the Barnsley players. Man of the match went to Vignesh Durai who broke up attack after attack at right back.

Next week the Reds have another tough away match at Doncaster 4ths.
