Bucks Too Good for Canaries on the Day

Report by Merv Nash

Barwell's mini run of three draws came to an abrupt halt as home side Buxton secured a comprehensive victory over the "Canaries", the only surprise of the afternoon at the "Silverlands" was that their dominance failed to produce a much bigger winning margin. Barwell's performance left a lot to be desired, playing with three central defenders was a shambles with them being dragged all over the place, and in general they were overrun by their opponents, to sum their day up they even missed a penalty. Two wins in the last fourteen league games makes sorry reading.

The opening exchanges were very feisty but referee Tom Nield established a firm but fair control of the proceedings, and a couple of goals in the space of three minutes determined Buxton the result.

Craig King met a low cross from Lee Morris who got away up the right, and King's scorching twelve yard half volley earned a 24th minute lead.

The hosts doubled their advantage with Morris confidently thumping home a spot kick after mid-fielder Matt Thornhill was pulled down in the area by Barwell's central defender Guy Hadland.

Barwell then produced their one and only goal attempt in the first half when striker Luke Barlone's shot forced a fine tip over the bar from ex Rotherham keeper Andy Warrington.

The Buxton keeper played a major part in keeping his sides two goal lead, in the opening minute of the second half he saved Barlone's penalty awarded for a Derek Niven foul on Danny Quinn.

On 50 minutes the game was virtually over when Morris broke free again, drew Barwell keeper Neil Collett to him, then unselfishly squared to mid fielder Thornhill who had a simple conversion from ten yards out.

Barwell battled on without really looking like scoring and most of the action was at the other end with Grant Black, Neil Stevens and Niven all having efforts well saved by the agile Collett who was probably the only player to come out with any credit for Barwell.

Neil Collett, Scott Lower (Shane Byrne 70), Connor Gudger, Guy Hadland, Jamie Hood, Danny Spencer (Nigel Julien 45), Kieron Brehon, Scott Hadland (Anthony Griffith-Junior 45), Luke Barlone, Jack Edwards, Danny Quinn.
