Chettle gave his thoughts after the 2-1 defeat to Matlock Town

Basford United manager Steve Chettle was critical of his players following their exit from the FA Cup with a 2-1 defeat away to Matlock Town.

United went behind just three minutes into the game when Spencer Harris scored from the penalty spot. They were 2-0 down on the hour mark when they failed to clear their lines allowing Jordan Sinnott to smash home. Liam Hearn did pull a goal back with ten minutes of the game left but it was too late as they could not get back into the game.

And Chettle believes mistakes cost his side the game.

“We’re absolutely killing ourselves at the minute,” Said the manager. “We’re still waiting for a team to score a good goal against us.

“Today we’ve been the victim of our own defeat. Two awful mistakes. The first one the lads are saying it’s not a penalty but it looked like it from where I was. The second one we’ve got to take our medicine and clear the ball.

“It’s tough to take. We asked them to stay in the game for as long as we can and we’ll create a chance. But within ten minutes of the second half we’ve shot ourselves in the foot again.”

Chettle says his side need to put these mistakes right as quick as possible.

“We’ve got to learn,” He said. “We’ve just had a heart to heart with all the players inside about how we have to learn.

“We want to play whenever we can but there are times when you can’t and you have to take your medicine.

“We’ve got to learn and stop making mistakes.”
