Basford United produced an impressive and well disciplined performance to win 3-0 away at Workington and stretch their winning run to four games.

After soaking up pressure from the home side for over an hour, with goalkeeper Saul Deeney outstanding, they struck on the break to score the goals that sealed the win.

They were forced into late changes as Matt Thornhill and Liam Hearn were late withdrawals from the squad to travel.

James Reid was restored to the starting line-up and he was instrumental in the first goal after fourteen minutes. Reid was tripped and Shaun Harrad coolly despatched the penalty to score his first for Basford. (photo above).

Earlier Garry Thompson forced a fine diving save from Deeney, and the keeper stole the show, tipping Bard Carroll's shot over, and diving to save from both Thompson and Conor Tinnion.

Five minutes from the break Basford suffered a blow as Stef Galinski had to leave the field injured, Zak Goodson taking his place.

Workington came out on fire for the second half, pushing Basford back. Another shot from Tinnion forced yet another top notch save from Deeney then Gari Rowntree’s effort clipped the top of the crossbar and went over.

There was a brief respite as Nat Watson broke and fired wide.

Having soaked up pressure, Basford then struck with two goals in three minutes.

On 65 minutes Zak Goodson found space to head in from Fernando Bell-Toxtle's cross and three minutes later Jack Thomas made it three with an expertly flighted chip, returning keeper Aaran Taylor’s punched clearance with interest.

Deeney was not finished, saving at point blank range from Jordan Holt, but the goals took the sting out of the home side and Basford were able to see out the match without incident.
