Basford started 2014 in the same way that finished 2013 with another fine display against top opposition.Today 2nd placed Tadcaster were defeated 5-3.

3rd placed Basford were excellent value for the victory and powered into a 4-0 half time advantage with the vistors shell shocked to say the least. The calibre of goals 2/3/4 were superb and all the result of fine approach play. After Tadcaster defender Sparks headed into his own net under pressure for the opener on 7 min United never looked back. Fabian Smith capped a fine team move to cooly net low on 21 min after great work from Lee Hendrie. Hendrie for not the 1st time this campaign was on the receiving end of some rough treatment early doors to no avail as the midfielder shined with a great display. On 26 min the Ex Villa player threaded a great ball through for Ryan Whitehurst to roll under Tadcaster keeper Bigglesworth, TJ Nightingale was on hand to touch home on the goal line despite the vistors looking for an offside flag that rightly did,nt come.Videos show Nightingale came from behind a last defender to net. Uniteds 1st half endeavours were not done as more great work by Hendrie saw Sam Cravens goalbound effort deflect perfectly for Ryan Whitehurst to bury for 4-0 on 39 minutes.Dream land for Basford with again the vistors looking for an offside decision that rightly never materialised as a result of the deflection.
A spate of early 2nd half injuries that required 3 United subs seemed to impact the tempo for the home side as the visitors tried to salvage some pride.A rare mistake from Andy Fretwell saw Martin Holts back pass roll past him for 4-1 on 65 minutes. Fretwell shouldnt harbour on the mistake as the keeper made a string of brilliant 1st and 2nd half saves with the pick being a fine point block save from a 2nd half header early doors. Unfortunately a highly charged game exploded on 71 minutes as referee Abbas had little option to brandish red cards to the Tadcaster keeper Biggleswaite and Uniteds Theo Smith for throwing punches in a 20 man altercation that was ugly to say the least.More could have gone also but fortunately the official who had a fine game showed good common sense. Unfortunately the events on the touchline were taking centre stage in the latter stages of the game as numerous incidents threatened to get out of hand as spectators encroached the field of play on several occasions to remonstrate with players. The visitors netted a 2nd on 91 minutes from a corner and then on 95 minutes brought it back to 4-3 with another effort bundled home from a corner. 98 minutes with the visitors sending everyone including the makeshift keeper forward for a long throw into the Basford box. United cleared the danger and punted up field for Ryan Whitehurst to roll into the empty net from 35 yards for the final goal and a 5-3 home win for Basford.
A great statement victory for Basford this one against very good opposition and it erases the memory of our worst night of the campaign against Tadcaster back in Oct. The victory keeps United on the edges of the top positions of the NECL which is a great acheivement in our 1st season at this level.
Next up for United a date with title favourites Brighouse on Tuesday at Greenwich Avenue although this one is a 2nd round league cup tie 7.45pm ko.
