South Shields 1 Basford United 1

Playing with the strong wind at their backs in the first half, Basford took the game to their opponents and went close twice in the first two minutes, Nat Watson seeing his shot cleared off the line, then Lewis Carr’s cross / shot clipped the top of the bar.

Soon after Jack Thomas went on an good run down the right and sent in a cross which was met by the head of Henri Wilder before a deflection sent it wide.

Kieran Preston was called into action in the 17th minute, saving Luke Daly’s low shot with his foot.

Basford then had an excellent chance to take the lead as Watson sent in a superb cross for Matt Thornhill, but his shot was wide.

Jack Thomas was next to hit the bar, with a 20 yard shot in the 25th minute (pictured above) that beat home keeper Liam Connell but was just too high.

Everyone in the ground was left wondering how Basford did not take the lead just before half time. Thornhill’s header from a Ryan Wilson free-kick looked destined for the net before Connell pulled off an excellent save and the rebound then struck the crossbar before being hacked off the line.

The second half saw South Shields enjoy plenty of possession whilst a fine defensive display restricted them to few clear cut chances.

Connell saved from Thornhill after a quick counter attack, then on the hour, Carr firing in a low shot after a scramble in the penalty area.

Preston saved from Craig Baxter, injuring himself in the process, then from Nathan Lowe.
With thirteen minutes remaining, Thomas nearly made it two with a powerful shot, Connell diving to save.

As the minutes ticked by, the home side stepped up the pressure, Ben Harrison heading wide with four minutes to go, then Jon Shaw was wide with a shot two minutes into added time.

Five extra minutes had been played when Shaw’s shot was handled by Wilson on the line. Wilson saw red and after a delay, Robert Briggs hammered home the penalty. high into the net.
