Basford United made it back to back home wins with a hard fought 1-0 win over 10- man Radcliffe Borough.

The visitors had the better chances in the first half but were unable to find a goal as the scores were level at the break.

Scott Metcalfe received two yellow cards 15 minutes after the restart for two bad fouls. United made their extra man count as Matt Thornhill headed home after a corner was flicked goalwards.

Despite some late pressure from the visitors Basford held on to earn all three points.

There was one change to the Basford starting line-up that lost 1-0 away to Grantham Town. Courey Grantham dropped to the bench and was replaced by James Reid. On the bench there were two changes as Zak Goodson and Lewis Carr were replaced by Liam Hearn and Dennell Stokes.

Basford struggled to get into the game in the opening quarter of an hour as Radcliffe created the better chances. Matthew Wolfenden forced Kieran Preston into a good stop after he was played in on goal. After a corner had caused issues in the Basford backline, Wolfenden had another strike fizz past the post.

The hosts first chance of the game came just after the 20th minute. A corner fell to Stef Galinski but he could not keep his effort down and blasted over the bar. After several misplaced passes Basford managed to create another chance on 35 minutes. Nat Watson burst in between two Radcliffe defenders before being fouled. James Reid stepped up and fired the subsequent free kick off the bar.

Radcliffe then had the ball in the net but it was quickly ruled out for offside. After the final ten minutes of the half went by without either side creating a chance as the two went in goalless at the break.

At the start of the second half Liam Ellis was played in but he could only slice the ball wide of the Basford goal. Neither side were unable to get hold of the ball but it was the visitors who made the most of it when they did keep hold of it. They broke on the counter and forced Preston into tipping the ball over the bar.

Radcliffe were reduced to ten men just after the hour mark. Metcalfe found himself with two yellows in quick succession. First, he was booked for a foul as Basford looked to break and just moments later he received a second yellow for a bad lunge on Dom Roma.

The hosts made their extra man count with just over 15 minutes left to play. A corner was flicked goalwards and Thornhill was there to head it into the net.

Radcliffe had the chance to get level in the 82nd minute but Richard Smith headed wide at the back post when he should have hit the target.

Basford then had ‘keeper Preston to thank for keeping out the visitors. He pulled off another good stop to keep out Smith before keeping out a header with a fingertip save, the rebound was somehow blazed over by Wolfenden.

United managed to hold onto the final whistle to ensure they returned to winning ways and recorded back to back home wins.
