Basford United v Stalybridge Celtic | 9/9/2019| Kick-Off 7:45pm

LAST TIME OUT:

Basford went out of the FA Cup, losing 2-1 away at Matlock Town.

The hosts went ahead in the second minute through a Spencer Harris penalty. Other than the penalty, neither team created many clear-cut chances in the first half. Kieran Preston was called upon once during the half, when he made a great save with his feet from close range.

The hosts doubled their lead inside ten minutes of the re-start. Basford head didn’t drop and they pulled a goal back through a Liam Hearn penalty, after Stef Galinski was fouled by the keeper.

Despite continued pressure for the final 15 minutes, United couldn’t find a way through and their FA Cup was over.

Stalybridge also went out of the FA Cup on Saturday, conceding in both halves to go down 2-0 at home to Marine FC.

Celtic started the brighter of the two teams, having several early chances, before Niall Cummins put Marine ahead.

With the score at 1-0 Stalybridge created several good chances but couldn’t find the killer blow that would see them draw level. Marine ensured a place in the next round when they put the game beyond Stalybridge with five minutes to go. Rumenio Barai scored his first goal in a Marine shirt and Stalybridge were out of the FA Cup.

PREVIOUS ENCOUNTERS:

The two sides met in the Northern Premier League last season. A hat-trick from James Reid and a goal each for Matt Thornhill and Lewis Carr would see Basford run out 5-2 winners and ease past Stalybridge at Greenwich Avenue.

Basford travelled to Stalybridge on the final Saturday of the season. Stef Galinski put Basford ahead on the stroke of half time and 20 minutes into the second half Jerry Nash made it 2-0 to Basford and secured all three points.
