Basford work hard to see off Tividale (VIDEO NOW POSTED)

Basford responded in perfect fashion to bounce back from Tuesdays loss to Lincoln with a hard working win at home to Tividale.

On a spring like afternoon Martin Carruthers was absent Kyle Dixon who suffered a reaction to a recent injury and with Eugene Bopp serving the final game of a 3 match suspension then the United engine room was a little banged up.
A fast paced start saw chances for Ash Grayson and Cory Grantham brought a fine save from visiting keeper Thomas Turner. Any lingering disappointments from Tuesday were quickly erased as Fabian Smith marked a fine performance with a strike to open the scoring on 12 minutes Basford looked pretty comfortable although a few early warning bells from some quick Tividale strikers. The pattern of the game could have changed dramatically on 35min as Tividale were gifted the equaliser by a rare mistake in the United rearguard that saw Chris Sterling gallop clear and hauled down from behind. The official awarded a penalty that should have been a free kick as the offence was outside the box, but United waited with worry as to what card the official would brandish which thankfully was a yellow for Rob Darkin although he was clear last man. Chris Sterling took the spot kick and coolly sent Saul Denney the wrong way to level the scores at 1-1.Next up a blow for our banged up midfield saw Anthony Griffiths Junior limp off early but the blow was softened by the return of Jermaine Hollis who was given his 1st meaningful involvement after returning from a long layoff. United responded perfectly to go back in front on 41 minutes. Good build up saw Reuben Wiggins-Thomas play in Cory Grantham to power home for the HT advantage 2-1.
2nd period it was important Basford did,nt let Tividale hang about too long and after Dion Miekle fired over from point blank. Basford needed a 2 goal cushion but had to wait until 77 minutes for that all important goal. This one saw Ash Grayson play in Stuart Hendrie who clinically beat the keeper for 3-1. The visitors though would not go down without a fight and on 80 minutes substitute Desean Martin coolly lifted over Saul Deeney after been given a sight of goal for 3-2 and the potential of a nervy last 10 minutes. Thankfully for Basford this was averted as Cory Grantham put over a fine cross that saw a majestic header from Reuben Wiggins-Thomas restore the 2 goal margin at 4-2. This was the final action of the day and made the more important given the slip ups of our nearest playoff rivals Lincoln, Leek Town and Chasetown who all dropped points on the day.
FT 4-2
Hardworking win this one typified by a fine display from Fabian Smith who was a worthy MOM for a display capped with a goal.Fine return to form for Rueben Wiggins-Thomas.
With no midweek game United now will gear up for the Easter weekend period of games that sees Goole Town visit Greenwich Avenue on Sat followed by Basford travelling to local rivals Carlton Town on Easter Monday.
