Watson shines against Scarborough

A masterclass from Nat Watson saw Basford United beat top of the table Scarborough Athletic in a dramatic tie at Greenwich Avenue.

Goals from Greg Tempest and two from Nat Watson led Basford to an impressive 3-1 win to take them up to 5th in the league.

Greg Tempest gave the home side the lead in the 14th minute when he poked the ball past Scarborough keeper Thomas Taylor from 12 yards.

Just two minutes later Basford were nearly gifted a goal when Scarborough full back Joshua Lacey attempted to head the ball back to his keeper from four yards out which resulted in him hitting the post and conceding a corner.

Watson scored Basford’s second after a beautiful exchange of passes in the Scarborough box created the space and he fired the ball low past the keeper at the near post.

Scarborough’s first notable chance came in the 35th minute when Jamie Forester’s shot from range went just wide of the far post.

Tempest had another chance when Watson played the midfielder in with a clever backheel, but Tempest couldn’t find the target and his shot across goal went wide.

Just before half time The Seadogs pulled one back through Michael Coulson who powered the ball into the bottom left corner of the net when the ball fell to him in the box.

With 25 minutes left Watson had the chance to secure Basford victory when Jack Thomas was tripped in the penalty area however Basford’s top scorer sent the spot kick wide of the right post.

He made up for his miss in the 87th minute by flicking the ball over the Scarborough defence and striking it into the bottom left.
The home side went down to 10 men when Dom Roma was sent off in the 90th minute for a bad challenge just inside the Basford half.
