BBFC II 2-2 Sedlescombe II

The Baptists second string earned a creditable draw against Sedlescombe reserves on a hot and sunny day at the Rec.

The second game of the day (after a very entertaining 4-3 win for the first team, also against Sedlescombe) saw the home side start the stronger, getting the ball down, building from the back and creating some good chances. The new strike partnership of Adam How and Gary Bryant were causing the Sedlescombe defence problems.

The game was tuned on its head, half way through the first period when Sedlescombe broke down the left and a cross found a player running from deep who finished into the corner. That gave Sedlescombe some encouragement and as the Baptists sat back resorting to long balls, Sedlescombe grew into the game even more.

Into the second half and again the home started strongly. The impressive Ollie Norris was brought down in the box after a driving run, for a penalty. Debutante Dale Matthews stepped up and finished coolly into the corner.

Five minutes later and the Baptists take the lead. Norris picks the ball up wide right. A jinking run into the box beating three players creates the opportunity which he despatches expertly into the far corner. Already a candidate for goal of the season.

With 25 left to play, Sedlescombe are back on level terms. A well taken corner finds an unmarked player in the box whose strong downward header finds the back of the net.

Nip and tuck form then till the final whistle, with perhaps the Baptists finishing the stronger team. Striker Adam How had a couple of good chances but was foiled by a combination of good goalkeeping and strong runs by covering defenders.

Some excellent performances by skipper, Sam Loughman, returnees Ben Hollingsworth and Greg Bennett, brothers Kieran and Trystan Mayhew in central midfield and debutante Luke Falconerer at RB topped by a man of the match performance from Ollie Norris.

A good promising start against strong opponents with lots to be encouraged by. We travel to Robertsbridge reserves next week seeking to claim our first three points of the season.
