After some last minute selection concerns resolved a bare 11 knew that, in the intense heat, conserving energy and retaining possession was key in this first league match at Glinton.
A first run out as a unit, the early exchanges settled the nerves and ensured st ives knew they were in for a tough match.
James Gregson Ben Brittain and Henry Mahan were creative and confident in attack and carved chances supported wide by Ethan Foster and Edward Moisey. The breakthrough came midway through the first half with Edward firing a tempting cross and Ben ensuring the finish.
The visitors carried a threat in possession but failed to really trouble the bourne deeping defence including the excellent Wes Thomas, in open play. However, through an unfortunate slip from the otherwise infallible Barden followed by a st ives drag flick, the dragons found themselves 2.1 down at the turnaround.
Determination was needed and delivered. Simon Goode launched wave after wave and Mark Cox & Pete Moisey held firm in the middle. Ben Brittain restored parity at 2.2 and numerous further chances went begging, notably Edward failing to register a goal his performance deserved.
It was left to Henry Mahan to seal the points late on after great attacking play he was able to slot home to complete an excellent start to the league campaign.
