A Fighting determined comeback keeps the Dragons winning streak going
There’s nothing going to stop them now
The Dragons started lively having most of the play spreading the ball through midfield players Kirsty Martin and Jen Orwell out wide to Helena Darraugh, who made runs into the Leadenham Circle but nothing came of them. Pressure from the Dragons continued and this was rewarded after 15minutes with a well deserved short corner but unfortunately the Dragons were unable to convert.
The Dragons seemed to go to sleep after this enabling Leadenham to push the Dragons back deep into their own half applying pressure on the Dragons defence. Leadenham were unable to make runs into the Dragons circle, stopped by determined play from the defensive line of Dawn McShane, Rachel Gale and Nadine Curtis. Leadenham resorted to hard hitting balls into the Dragons circle and after 23 minutes one flew into the circle and was deflected off of Dragons defender Kay Greenaway’s stick and despite a tremendous reflex touch from goalkeeper Rose Taylor -Jackson, the ball ended up in the goal. This gave the Leadenham team confidence and continued pressure from them resulted in a free hit on the 25meter line being awarded. A quick pass and another hard hit straight into the Dragons circle found a Leadenham forward unmarked on the post who deflected accurately into the Dragons goal making it 2 - 0. The Dragons managed to soak up Leadenham pressure and were thankful to hear the half time whistle. A major turn for the Dragons and the first time they have been 2-0 down this season.
A stern half time talk saw the Dragons come out with more composure and slick passing between Lily Fitch and Katie Anderson finding Kirsty Martin in front of goal who finished with confidence easily beating the goalie with just a minute on the clock, pulling the score back to 2 - 1. An obvious difference in The Dragons play in the second half saw continued pressure from the midfield, linking well with wingers Alice Brownlow and Rachel Adams earning them two quick short corners that could not be converted. A third short corner in the 15 minute of the second half saw Millie Durrant’s convert from a strong direct hit and beating the defence line, straight on goal. The Dragons were now playing with more confidence and were working as a team, determination to now go for a winning goal. Leadenham’s ventures into the Dragons half were dealt with by a dominate defensive line and intelligent play from defender Rachel Gale.
The last ten minutes saw the Dragons push for the win and short corners in the 26th and 30th minute were awarded but again the Dragons were unable to convert. Exceptional play in the last few minutes of play starting from well in the Dragons defence, but Kirsty Martin’s shot just went wide if goal. Another great run through midfield opened up Leadenham and a pin point pass from out on the right wing from Helena Darragh found Rachel Adams free in the circle who wasn’t going to miss from there, converted goal number 3 with 3 minutes left on the clock.
Another fine win 3-2 by the Dragons after going 2 down emphasising the strong determined team spirit and work commitment of the team. A fixture where the Dragons needed to apply pressure on the chasing pack to secure their dominance at the top of the league.
