When Bourne Deeping hosted Sudbury in the wake of their thumping win over Shefford and Sandy, hopes were high and the Dragons certainly started the game strongly, moving the ball comfortably through Sudbury’s attempted high press.
This brought an early reward - a penalty flick, awarded after a foot on the goal line, put away by Stuart Biggs.
Bourne Deeping remained settled and, while Sudbury grew into the game, the game was evenly poised for the majority of the first half.
The away side did manage to build some pressure and successive short corners led to a penalty flick of their own, captain Phil Arnold penalised for a professional foul. Sudbury duly scored to level the game.
The second half of the game belonged to Sudbury; their half time team talk clearly focused on the press and they executed this far more effectively, winning the ball back in dangerous positions.
It took a while for them to break the deadlock but they capitalised when the time came, scoring two in quick succession - one a close range finish following a good save by Luke Barkworth and the other a slightly fortunate short corner routine.
The hosts were left chasing the game in the final fifteen minutes and hope was kept alive by Simon Shorter when he slapped in a firm shot from a short corner. Despite Sudbury being reduced to nine men at one point, the mountain proved too hard to climb and Bourne Deeping were left ruing another close loss and another missed opportunity.
