Beccehamian Rugby Club is delighted and immensely proud to announce that Angela Broadhurst has been awarded the prestigious Kent County RFU President's Award at the County's Annual Volunteer awards 2026, presented on Thursday 11 June.

"This will go to a club volunteer whose efforts, more often than not, are unsung, and who makes an all-round significant contribution to the success of a club, either on the pitch and/or off of it."

Angela's nomination:
"Angela has been the cornerstone of our club for over 25 years, demonstrating unwavering commitment across multiple vital roles.
As Safeguarding Officer, she has supported generations of mini and youth players from U7 to U18, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment for all.
As Clubhouse Secretary, she has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to maintain and improve facilities, keeping the clubhouse welcoming, clean, and well-managed.
Angela consistently goes above and beyond, embodying rugby’s core values of respect, teamwork, and integrity.
Her dedication has had a profound and lasting impact on both the club and wider community, making her truly deserving of this award."

Over many years, Angela has undertaken an extraordinary range of responsibilities in support of the club at both age-grade and adult playing levels, as well as the multiple critical roles to enable the club and clubhouse to function on a daily, and season-to-season basis - think multiple administrative roles including 250 club, navigating GMS & safeguarding for playing and assisting with festival authorisations, daily & season clubhouse maintenance, ensuring playing kit is fit for purpose, washing & cleaning kit & the clubhouse etc... the list goes on.

Angela's commitment, generosity of spirit, and countless hours of voluntary service have helped shape the experience of generations of players, families, coaches, and volunteers. This award is a fitting tribute whose dedication has made an immeasurable difference to Beccs Rugby Club over a very long time!

Angela's résumé

My original volunteering goes back to 1983/4 when I used to cook the players’ teas some Saturday afternoons . I did that fairly regularly until the mid 1990s. I also did the odd bar duty. When Paul started playing mini rugby, I got involved with team admin and carried that for a fair while, along with supporting Ronnie Hoare, who was the House Secretary and wanted someone to help him out by flagging any issues arising in the clubhouse. I carried on with that role through the tenure of two more House Secretaries ( Messer and Jockey), along with supporting Julie Adkins while she was the Bar Manager. I helped out with festivals and any other event as and when I could too.

At the same time, I took on the role of Safeguarding Officer from Nigel around 2003 and carried on with that until finally finding someone to take over in 2025. My time as safeguarding lead coincided with the appearance of the GMS system and I ended up having to deal with the admin for that, which was never a easy thing.

During Robbie’s tenure as both Mini and Youth Chairman, I helped him out with admin and got involved with ordering team kit, for junior and senior sides. No idea of the year really. That has continued, along with managing the laundering of senior kit, which came about because of the increasing costs of service washes, who would charge extra for each wash they had to do to get the mud out. Having club washing machines was key here.

I formally took on the role of House Secretary in 2014, having been doing most of it for some years anyway. I also started managing (and doing)the cleaning, along with one another as it became increasingly clear that using outsiders was not working. There are three of us now and it is the only job for which I have been paid and I will still do it until a replacement is found.

Other things I have done voluntarily over the years include doing the fixture card four 12 years, managing the 250 club (ongoing still), re-upholstering bar furniture, making curtains for the hall and Members’ bar, washing senior players training bibs, doing repairs on them when needed and looking after the goldfish! I have helped to organise tours to Tournan during 6 nations season and arranged accommodation for them when they visited us. I was also involved in the admin for the tour by the Romanians!

It has been a rollercoaster of a time and I am immensely proud of Beccehamian RFC as the wonderful club that it is. In all the time I have been involved, it has never lost its soul and its clear values of being an inclusive, friendly and family orientated club. I think my volunteering came from the affection I have for Beccs and being able to help out was a natural thing for me to do. I’d like to thank all those people who have volunteered alongside me over the years. The award is a lovely way for me to sign off from duty and whilst I am definitely taking a back seat to do more in my garden and in my sewing room, with probably a few more days out here and there with Robbie, the club will always be in my heart. I don’t regret a moment and I hope that many more volunteers will continue to step up to keep this wonderful club growing and going! Go Beccs!
