We are delighted to announce the appointment of Daren Maeer as 1XV captain for the 2022/23 season.

Following the stepping down of Jack Baldry as captain for the upcoming season, the players were asked to vote on who they wished to be their next captain, of which Daren was announced as the winner.

Daren has had a long career in the game playing locally and has been a part of the club in various capacities for the last three decades. In this time he has held many different roles such as 2XV captain, and coach whilst winning every award there is possible at the club.

On his appointment, Maeer commented “This seals the deal for me and is the greatest honour I could be awarded. I’ve wanted this opportunity all of my career and with the backing of the coaching team and players behind me, I feel we can make a great push to bring bring the club back to where it belongs. My focus is to make Beccles the most enjoyable club in the area again. We have a brilliant bunch of lads at the club and I can’t wait to get started.

Head Coach Aaron Swanborough commented “This is a great appointment for the club. Daren has been fantastic since his return to Beccles last season and he has made an immediate impact on and off the pitch. Players and club members have huge respect for him which is crucial for this leadership role. I have no doubt that he will be a success”.

Leigh Gedney will continue in his role as Vice-Captain for the upcoming season and work alongside Daren both on and off the field.

Head Coach, Swanborough also commented on Gedney’s continuation in the role with “I am also delighted that Leigh has continued in his role as VC. Just like Daren he is well respected throughout the club and I think they will make a good leadership pairing.

Swanborough finished by wanting to pass on his gratitude to outgoing captain Jack Baldry. “Finally I would like to say a massive thank you to Jack Baldry on his crucial role as captain he played last season. Although he has decided to step down, he will certainly be taking that role again in the future”.

Preseason for the 2022/23 season begins on Tuesday 5th July.
