Beccles held on for a narrow win when they played Norwich 2s on Saturday. Despite looking in control for much of the game they were left hanging on at the end to win by 18-17

With a limited league program in the second half of the season Beccles are looking to develop their player base over their remaining league and friendly fixtures. They went in to this game with a regular pack but some more experimental options used in the backs. With the normal half back partnership not available Loader and Walker came in to these positions. There was also an inexperienced back three with Girling and Sisley coming in to the team and Fenn making his first team debut. The bench was a mixture of youth and new players with Warnes, Petch, Lacey-Goodman and Baker all getting their chance.
The game was tight to start off with, neither team creating many chances. In the end it was Loader who opened the scoring. He took a quick tap on the twenty-two and wound his way through the defence to score. Fenn missed the conversion but added a penalty soon after the stretch the lead.
Norwich hit back with a try before Beccles scored another. With Beccles driving the ball deep in to Norwich territory the ball was fed out to Morton on the blindside who powered his way over for the score. Beccles went in to half time leading 13-5.
Beccles had a lot of ball and territory in the second half. A drive towards the line by Baldry was stopped just short but Johnstone recycled the ball quickly and spun out of the ruck to touch down and extend the Beccles lead.
Beccles looked comfortable but as the game went in to the last quarter the game opened up with lots of changes being made. Norwich found their running game and began to test the Beccles defence. They scored a converted try and with a couple of minutes left added another out wide. With the conversion to come Beccles lead by one point. The conversion was missed but Beccles still had some time to see out.
Norwich took the game to Beccles but a good tackle on the line by Sisley and a turnover by Petch meant Beccles were able to see the game out to win by 18 -17.
Man of the match was Loader.
This week Beccles 2s travel to Crusaders 2s.
