It was back to the start of the season in terms of number of players but not in the performance. Beccles travelled for their longest away trip of the season with only fourteen players, but did not let this affect their recent good run of form – making it four wins on the bounce for the men in green.
Deciding to play with only seven forwards and a number of people out of position Beccles started brightly, their intensity at the break down and in the tackle was forcing the opposition into mistakes, and it wasn’t long before they were able to capitalise on one to score. Callum Roberts spotted a gap and the back and chipped over the top, gathering his own kick to score under the posts – the conversion was added by Fenn. It wasn’t long before Beccles double their lead when Roberts demonstrated his excellent footwork to score his second again Fenn added the extras.
Wisbech were stunned into a response, gaining field position and from a number of tapped penalties they were able to force their way over to reduce the arrears. This only made Beccles play better – with the Beccles front five of Rix, Mooney, Pitts, Guy and - playing his first full game of rugby – Mison out scrummaged the Wisbech eight allowing the back row of Giddins and Fenn to run free gaining ground and making tackles. From a scrum against the head scrum half Nat Hewitt took the ball to the 5 metre line before off-loading to Pitts to score – Fenn converted.
Half time score: 21-12
Payne kicked off the second half and Beccles continued in the same manner in which they finished the first half. The midfield of Payne, Roberts and Armstrong were dominating their opposite numbers and were bringing the back three of Gunning, Broadbent and Carpenter into the game at every opportunity. Full back Gunning gained 20 metres returning a wayward Wisbech clearance, Giddins took the ball on further and quick hands from the backs put Carpenter in the corner for a well worked team try – Fenn narrowly missed the conversion.
By now Beccles were looking to run the ball at every opportunity, with backs and forwards playing in harmony. From a quick tap penalty on half way Wisbech lost a man to the sin bin for a cynical trip on Payne. A good touch find and line out led to Payne scoring after some neat footwork in midfield. Beccles continued to press and from a scrum penalty taken on by Rix and Giddins Nat Hewitt proved his new boots were not just for show as his sprinted in under the posts – conversion added by Fenn. With Wisbech back up to full strength Beccles were now dominant in all areas of the game – Fenn was winning lineout ball at will, the scrum was shunting the opposition back on every ball and the backs were making their tackles.
To their credit Wisbech got back into the game and from a scrum their back row managed to sneak over to score a try, which was converted. Determined to have the last word Beccles went back up field and with the last move of the match Roberts completed a classy hat trick – converted by Fenn.
With so many players standing up to be counted – Milson playing his first full game of rugby, Fenn moving from full back to back row, Gunning playing at full back – there were many candidates for B&B Skips Man of the Match. However for his general excellent play and hat trick in only his second match for the Bulls the B&B Skips Man of the Match is Callum Roberts.
Danny Rix, Mark Mooney, Jonathan Pitts, Aaron Guy, Tom Mison, Dickie Fenn, James Giddins, Nat Hewitt, John Payne, Charlie Broadbent, Callum Roberts, Stuart Armstrong, Mike Carpenter, Alex Gunning
Beccles are at home this week to Holt 2 and are looking to make it five wins on the bounce – Kick off 3pm
