Beccles 2s had a wet and windy run out when they travelled to play North Walsham 3rd team. In a hard fought match North Walsham won by 15-5.

A rare 2nd team fixture gave Beccles the chance to give some of their young, new and fringe players a chance for a run out. Jolly, Petch and Warnes started for the first time at senior level in the pack. There was also a place on the bench for new recruit Chantry.
The conditions were not good with the pitch very wet and muddy, leading to a stop start game. North Walsham dominated early on with the front row of Knights, Pitts and Moore having to battle hard at scrum time. Beccles were pinned in their half but some good defence kept the opposition out.
Jolly showed some good early promise before an injury cut his afternoon short. He was replaced by Chantry who showed some good strong running to carry the ball out of defence. Despite being camped in their own twenty two for much of the half Beccles only conceded one try and went in to the halftime break losing 5-0.
The second half continued in a similar vane. North Waslham dominating but the Beccles defence lead by West, Wicks and Smith looking strong. With 20 minutes left Beccles suffered a triple blow. A passage of play ended with match ending injuries to James Sisley and Fenn and a North Walsham score in the corner.
Beccles took a little while to regroup and North Walsham added a third try soon after to lead by 15-0. Beccles finished the stronger however. Led by captain Holmes they began to carry the ball well and create chances of their own. Girling had a good chance to score but slipped just short of the line and was held up.
Despite losing Warnes to the sin bin Beccles continued to push for a try. A number of drives at the North Walsham line were held up. In the end the ball was recycled quickly and Taylor fed makeshift centre Gardiner. He in turn fed the ball out wide to club president Martin Sisley who finished well in the corner.
This gave a final score of 15-5.
Man of the match was youngster Petch who carried the ball well and tackled hard all day.
We are always looking for more players so we are able to field a 2nd team more regularly. Anyone interested should come along to a training session on Tuesday or Thursday (19:30) or contact Keith Johnstone (, 07788 430625) for more details.
