With the Club playing in the newly restructured WRU leagues, we take another look at a team who we will be locking horns with next season.

Heol Y Cyw RFC are the only team from outside the Mid District Rugby Union that will feature in the newly created Divsion One East Central next season.

Although it can be argued that if there was any East District Club who would be up to the tough physical challenges of Mid District rugby then it would be Heol Y Cyw.

They have an excellent set of forwards along with a very talented back line coached by former Bridgend scrum half Gareth Howells, who still plays for the Club.

The Cokerels, as they are known enjoyed a very good 2013/14 season. They finished joint third in Division One East and claimed victiories over both Champions Merthyr and runners up Ystrad Rhondda at home and were just pipped in the return fixtures. They have an excellent home record and their colours were only lowered twice at home last season and that was against Penallta and a reasurgent Ynysybwl.

Their league playing record last season saw them win 15 and lose 7 of their 22 fixtures. Of the 7 games they lost they claimed 3 losing bonus points which shows how difficult a team they will be to beat. They scored 67 tries and conceded 41.

The Club has a big family feel to it, in fact four brothers played for the Club last season. Josh, Zac, Luke and captain Adam O'Driscoll. Adam in fact is handing over the armband next season to Luke.

Mike Huckeridge, Nikki Bees and Rhys Owen have all featured in both the Green and Gold of Beddau and the Heol Y Cyw jersey over the years. Rhys suffered a nasty leg fracture whilst playing at Mount Pleasant and it is good to hear that he is now back to his best. A very talented scrum half.

Possibly the biggest name ever to put on the Red, Blue and White shirt of Heol Y Cyw was former Wales and British Lion Allan Bateman.

The Club was founded back in 1906 and it's current clubhouse was opened back in 1976 by the legendary Barry John.

Possibly the biggest moment in the Clubs history though was back at the end of the 2012/13 season when they defeated Rhydyfelin at the Millennium Stadium to collect the Swalec Plate. A fantastic achievement.

Over the last few years Beddau and Heol Y Cyw have enjoyed several pre-season games. Always a very tough place to go but always a fantastic welcome off the field.

We hope for more of the same next season and look forward to our meetings.
