Green & Gold leave it late to secure vital win to consolidate fourth place

From conducting a masterclass in 'How To Shoot Yourself In The Foot', to stealing a win at the death, Beddau subjected their supporters to a range of emotions.

injury and unavailability has been an ever present, unwelcome guest at the party and the news that the influential Kristian Parker had torn a hamstring in training and may be out for up to eight weeks wasn't what the Green and Gold needed to hear. On top of that work commitments deprived the pack of loose head Owen Cotton, while the fast developing Ben Stephens had succumbed to the coughing bug that seems to be laying various parts of society low.

An early encounter at scrum time looked ominous for Beddau as Emlyn were quick to exploit the blindside and several simple passes were well executed, enabling scrum half, Dafydd Evans, to score the try that his work had started.

The game then stagnated a little with Beddau efforts to take the game to their opponents being frustrated with handling errors. Emlyn, for their part, seemed intent on releasing the heavy brigade to run at the Beddau defence. It had the mixed blessing of creating some spectacular collisions, with thehome side on the front foot, while slowing the supply of ball to a hungry looking back division. One such attack ended with Beddau conceding a penalty. Emlyn opted to scrummage but with Cerith Jones having now found his feet at loose head and the always reliable, Adam Court, holding sway on his side, all Emlyn could do was to embark on a rolling maul. It looked untidy and referee, Mr Peter Evans, spotted an infringement that led to a yellow card for Beddau open side, Jordan Goodwin.

Eventually Beddau worked their way out of jail and Hywel Chatham was lining up a kick when Emlyn were offside. The kick fell short and Emlyn worked a space for outside half, Mitchell Jones, to find a good touch. Beddau failed to control the possession and Emlyn flanker, Joel James, strode into the Beddau 22. Cody Baker brought him down but the offload continued the assault. A good tackle from Callum Wheeler dislodged the ball but the full backs' clearing kick was gathered by Llyr Jones and a quick exchange of passes set the winger free to score a try that Shaun Leonard converted.

A Leonard penalty at halfway when Beddau hadn't retreated fell short but the Beddau attempt to run the ball faltered when what looked like a head high tackle on Joe Casella became an Emlyn penalty for not releasing. Dan Davies made it 15-0 at half time.

Beddau immediately moved onto the offensive at the start of the second half and scrum half Carl Lewis was just held up at the line following a tap and go penalty. A sustained period of pressure culminated in some feisty exchanges, when Beddau prop, Cerith Jones and a Newcastle Emlyn forward were sent to the bin. Beddau had won the penalty however and Hywel Chatham struck the three points.

When Callum Wheeler received a good pass from Chatham he was able to spot the drifting defence moving to close the space. The full back though, accelerated on an inside curve to find Joe Casella, who finished strongly for a try at the flag.

Beddau were now very much back in it when Callum Wheeler got himself needlessly carded. A penalty had already been signalled after replacement scrum half, David Francis, had been pulled back. Wheeler, however, took exception to the attentions of an opponent and his push was under the nose of the referee, who had no option other than showing the yellow card.

Hywel Chatham had been at the forefront of all that Beddau were offering. his angles of running, variety of kicks and accuracy of passing had tormented Emlyn and it was a late tackle on him that gave Beddau another foothold. A driving scrum was taken down but Chatham was off target with the penalty. Beddau pressure was now relentless and when Chatham and left wing, Cody Baker, added their presence to a drive it was Baker who sprang clear for the try.

Chatham didn't convert but had another chance when Emlyn intruded at a ruck. Again the normally reliable kicker was unable to draw his kick between the uprights and when yet another penalty was conceded by the retreating hosts, Beddau bravely went for gold. The lineout was won from the top, Dai Francis and Chatham opened the defence and Cody Baker waltzed through to set up the try for Tyler Wells. This time Hywel Chatham delivered the conversion.
