The Thursday night before Easter saw a double success for Bedford Athletic sides.
First up were the Colts XV who took the Bedfordshire Colts Cup with a 34-23 success against a much fancied Ampthill XV. It was the first Colts Cup success for the team in four years, Ampthill having held the Cup for three years running.
Within half an hour the final whistle had blown at Wright's Meadow to signal success in the Senior Cup also. In a match they finally won 27-17 Bedford Athletic never trailed. The first try was touched down within four minutes by Matt Shacklady with Leo Mortimer converting and although the hosts pulled the score back to 7-5, two further tries from Josh McCann and James Wallace with another Mortimer conversion made the score 19-5 on the 20 minute mark. Buzzard scored again before half time but a Mortimer penalty gave Bedford Athletic a 22-12 half time lead. Leighton Buzzard pulled the score back to 22-17 early in the second half but Rob Watkins on as a replacement closed the tie out in the closing stages to ensure the tie was won by 27 points to 17.
The victory marks a third Bedfordshire title in a row for the club and an eleventh in total and they now trail the all time record of fourteen titles held by Stockwood Park by just three.
