Bedford Athletic Warriors win Herts & Middlesex Plate competition

On the season ending finals day at Enfield Ignatians, Bedford Athletic 2s overcame Harpenden 2s 58-13.

Having participated in Merit Table 1 all season, Bedford Athletic lost their first round cup game at Fullerians but advanced to the Plate Final with a convincing win over Datchworth 2s.

The Final pitted 3rd place Athletic against 5th place Harpenden with Bedford Athletic playing with the wind in the first half. A high penalty count against them frustrated progress. Ben Feltham was successful with an early penalty but an early Liam Beaumont try was ruled out for crossing. Feltham kicked another penalty on 20 minutes before Beaumont did cross for the first try of the day three minutes later which Feltham converted. A burst of scoring before half time started with a Harpenden penalty but then two converted tries from Jamie Frost and Archie Simmons advanced the half time score to 27-3.

Harpenden may have thought that with the wind they would get back into the game but it was not to be as a Matt Nash double in the first few minutes of the second half coupled with one Feltham conversion made the score 39-3. The game was then ended as a contest when the Harpenden full back was sent off for a head butt on Nash after he scored, and following a converted Josh Palmer try there was also a long stoppage for an injury to the same player. Bedford Athletic then completed their scoring with two more tries between the 60th and 65th minutes, the first dotted down by Matt Shacklady who must have run nearly the length of the field and a second for Beaumont, both converted again by Feltham. There was a late rally from Harpenden who scored a couple of tries before the end but no doubting the victors who dominated the game throughout, whether they had the wind or not.

A win in their last game of the season meant some silverware for the Warriors and an opportunity to finish the season in credit with 12 wins, 11 defeats and 1 draw in 24 matches.
