Bedford Athletic start pre season with encouraging performance
By Jeremy Tyrrell
In their first pre season game Bedford Athletic outscored their Midlands Premier visitors Broadstreet by six tries to five.
With Bedford Athletic participating for a second season in London & South East Premier, the equivalent level to Broadstreet, this was a good early season test. Although Broadstreet did add three conversions to their five tries, conversions were not always attempted and in fact the home side attempted none at all in the course of the afternoon.
Broadstreet led by three tries to one at half time, the Bedford Athletic score coming from an intercept by Stephen Woodhead turning defence into attack for a charge that led to a try by Archie Simmonds.
In the second half the home side scored four further tries. A break by Morgan Dayes was carried on by Archie Duncan leading to a score for Harry Charter by the posts. Ryan Taylor profited from a charge down for the third try and Dayes himself went over for the fourth when the home scrum pushed Broadstreet off their own ball. The fifth try saw Woodhead finish off an attacking move down the right wing and the final try with the last move of the day went to Harry Sawford-Smith.
There were impressive home debuts from Harry Charter, Dan Sims, Erran Singh-Soomal, Archie Simmonds and Tom Davis.
