SWIFTS TAKE WIN AGAINST LEAGUE LEADERS IN PHYSICAL AWAY ENCOUNTER.

In a truly brutal, physical encounter, Swifts came away from league leaders Northampton BBOB’s with an impressive 12-17 victory with a performance that has been threatening for weeks.

‘The better the opposition, the better Swifts play’ was the motto of the afternoon as Swifts came out quick from the blocks, starving Northampton of any good ball by building phase after phase for the first ten or fifteen minutes. This possession soon paid off as sniping scrum half LOADER poached the ball at the back of the scrum and went over to put the visitors in the lead with ROBSON adding the extras to make it 0-7.

That is how the score stayed all through the first half and into the second with both teams really battling it out around the park, thumping tackles and strong running in abundance by the hosts and visitors. Swifts began to a have a shakey moment early in the second half as they became slightly unstructured for a few minutes and Northampton capitalised on this as they put some good phases together and went over to even the score at 7-7.

Swifts regrouped and began to regain territory although Northampton were once again holding strong, but such was the physical onslaught something had to give. That something was in the way of a penalty that ROBSON slotted over for Swifts to go ahead 7-10.

Northampton were then next to score after quick ball from scrum that passed through several sets of hands for the winger to touch down in the corner as Swifts could not quite scramble their defence in time. 12-10 to the hosts with ten minutes to play.

Swifts showed amazing restraint and control as once again they went through phase after energy sapping phase to keep moving forward, closer and closer to the Northampton try line. With phases came good ball and Swifts really were in control as they were guided by scrum half LOADER. Bodies were on the line for Swifts and LOADER was rewarded for his patience as he eased through the holes created by the forwards to go over for his second try which was again duly converted by ROBSON. Swifts were 12-17 with just minutes to go!

Sensible rugby ensued and Swifts closed the game, well and truly taking a scalp of the league leaders in what really was an epic game of rugby for both sides.

Special mentions go to props G NESS and D ROWLING for sterling performances in the front row and stepping up to the plate when it was really needed.
