Gary joined the club in September 2020 following the departure of Mark Ducket. He has had a long and successful career as a player and manager. His playing career saw him at Rushden & Diamonds where he won the Football Conference and Football League Division Two. He reached the FA Trophy Final with Kings Lynn Town before going on to win the Southern League with Kettering.

In 2009 Gary became the manager of Wisbech Town after signing one season earlier as player/assistant manager. Gary made the move back to his roots at Kings Lynn Town as manager in 2010 and was later appointed as general manager to help build links between the club and local community.

During seven years at The Walks, he guided them to promotion from step five, and again from step four, as well as taking King's Lynn to the FA Vase Semi-Finals in 2010/11 and the last 16 of the FA Trophy in 2012/13.

On 21 February 2017 Gary was sacked from his post as manager of King's Lynn Town, having been in charge of the club for a total of 384 matches.

Seven months after leaving the linnets, Setchell was announced as first team manager to Wisbech Town FC almost 7 years after previously leaving his post there. He resigned from the role in May 2019.

On Sunday 3rd April 2022, Gary signed a new contract to keep him as Bedford Town manager until the end of the 2023/24 season.
