Dynamos dig in to get draw !
By Iain Willcocks
Finally we get to play...
Downley Dynamos 1-1 Bedgrove Dynamos
Team: Edward; Luca, George, Max, Ellis; Conor, Charlie, Dorian, Kai, Callum, Aidan; Owen
This was the first game for a while due to bad weather and after a less than impressive training session yesterday. Mike started with all players who made the training session and demanded they worked for each other.
The match started well and Edward was looking for George and Luca from the goal kicks which worked well. Kai and Conor pulled out wide to give the angles and Bedgrove were looking well organised.
In the second minute Downley got a chance but Luca was on hand to thump the ball clear. Straight from that chance, Bedgrove created their own...a great ball from Owen behind the back line found Conor running through on goal...the ref/linesman called Aidan offside, but he did not touch the ball and Conor was clearly onside...shame.
Six minutes and Kai found some space and played in Aidan and he skipped past a challenge but hit his shot wide of the mark.
The next few minutes saw Bedgrove push forward even more and first Owen had a shot which was wide and soon after Callum won a corner, Kai swung it in and Max was on the end but again just wide of the target.
21st minute and Downley created space and the marking was poor at the back as they had a free shot which whistled just past the post. A warning for Bedgrove.
Moments later Owen won the ball in the middle and played Kai through on goal he moved onto his left but the keeper saved well. Bedgrove were still pushing and having more possession and next up Dorian collected a pass from George and moved forward, he passed to Kai but his shot went wide.
Bedgrove ended the half with a lot of the ball. Max had a run where he won a corner but Downley cleared their lines. Less than a minute later, Conor skipped past a challenge on the left and managed to win a corner. Charlie curled the corner in and Kai got on the end after Conor just flicked it on, but it went just wide of the mark. Half Time 0-0.
Bedgrove started well again in the second half with Callum winning a corner. Kai took the corner and a Downley defender nearly steered it past his own keeper and Aidan was unlucky not to score with the rebound.
34 minutes and against the run of play, Downley broke through and scored a good goal. Such a shame and not deserved. Mike and the coaches demanded Bedgrove get their heads up and search for the equaliser.
Downley were now on it and went straight on the attack again, Max was on hand to tackle well and block the shot. Charlie passed the ball to Callum who moved forward with pace and his pass found Aidan free in the middle, he swivelled and shot but it almost brushed the post on the way past.
Luca was then injured when clearing the ball and Mike shuffled the pack putting Max in the back line with Ellis.
The next 6 minutes saw Owen and Kai both have a couple of shots including a thunderbolt from Owen which went just over the bar. Great shot and deserved a goal. Bedgrove were running out of time and could not find the net.
47 minutes and Conor and Max combined with Max finding space for a great shot which was blocked and the ball fell to Aidan whose follow up shot was wide.
Downley were not lying down and were soon on the attack themselves, a mix up at the back saw their striker hit a ball just over the bar which would have been a real blow. Moments later Edward came running out to clear his lines superbly as Downley looked to score.
With less than 10 minutes remaining Mike moved Ellis into the middle and George came on at the back to partner Max.
Callum controlled a ball out from George and ran up the right flank, he found Kai running through but his shot was well saved. Bedgrove were pushing...Kai then swung in a corner and Owen got on the end of it but couldn't steer it home as it bobbled about and was cleared.
Finally with 3 minutes remaining Max won the ball and was taken out by a late challenge. Max got up and decided to take the free kick. He hit a superb cross which Owen managed to head the ball which smashed against the crossbar and the ball came out to Ellis who reacted the quickest and headed into the goal. 1-1 and a well deserved goal too !
The final 3 minutes saw Bedgrove really pushing forward but the goal would not come.
Final score 1-1.
All in all a good result despite a fairly scrappy game. The pitch was hard to play on with players slipping and sliding around. However, the boys really kept going and supported each other when they could.
Max was solid all match and has a great engine. Aidan, Conor, Kai and Callum battled well down the wings and provided an outlet and got forward when they could. Edward also played 60 minutes and made some important saves as Jay is out injured at the moment. Despite a quiet game by his standards, Ellis popped up with the goal which gained a very credible draw. Well done boys....!
