Bees back on track

Bees bounce back with display of season.
South Devon Football League, Division1
Newton Abbot 66 2, Beesands Rovers 4.
With the Bees reserve keeper, Carl Hoare, injured, midfielder James Hurt took his place between the sticks. Tim Bromfield returned to defence and was in the thick of it from the off, defending well before 66 volleyed high over the bar. Jed Tucker pressurised well forcing a throw in. A Newton corner was headed clear by Kurt Thiele leading to an attack at the other end but J Tucker was given as offside.
Elliot Bellamy intercepted well but his diagonal pass was just too heavy for Fin Bullen. 66 put a cross into the Bees area and the defence were wrong footed as the ball was knocked past Hurt for the opening goal 1-0. Bullen’s effort from distance was easily saved. Joe Merchant was bossing the midfield, willing to receive the ball, move it around and change direction.
Dave Lang’s throw in was headed on by Thiele to Danny Tucker who couldn’t quite make it but was given as offside. Lovely work from Merchant to D Tucker produced an intuitive pass for Thiele who let it go over his head but his half volley was just too high. Merchant was involved box to box. Merchant produced a great crunching tackle.
66 were having the better of it so far but the Bees were defending well. Bromfield played a lovely pass through to Lang who in turn lid it off for Bullen whose first effort was blocked and his second was saved. Bellamy was producing the goods down the left wing taking the ball to the bye line and crossing but his effort was blocked and cleared. D Tucker’s free kick was met at the far post by Bromfield’s foot but saved.
Successive 66 corners were cleared as the half came to an end. Bellamy was replaced by Will Garner for the second half. The Bees attacked from the off with no success. A further attack saw a box to box run from D Tucker but his shot was wide. The Bees were putting significant pressure on 66 eager to equalise. The Bees thought they had equalised but were harshly given as offside. Newton were well and truly rattled.
Bullen’s corner was headed across goal and met by Thiele’s foot but cleared. D Tucker’s pass into the area was met with a neat snap shot from Lang palmed out to Tom Harvey who put it back in with Thiele’s effort cleared as far as Merchant who saw his shot saved. A lovely ball out to Lang saw his measured cross met by Thiele who thumped it into the roof of the net for the equaliser, 1-1.
Within the minute Bullen struck from the edge of the area, 1-2.
Bromfield put in a good recovery tackle putting the striker off, conceding a corner. The corner saw Hurt put into pressure but he claimed the ball and held onto it well. Bromfield and the Harvey brothers defended well. Merchant played a delightful diagonal pass to Lang whose cross come shot nestled in the back of the net, 1-3.
The Bees were playing some lovely, passing football. Bromfield’s pass to D Tucker produced another intuitive header for J Tucker who, had he gone down, would have gained a penalty but he stayed on his feet and his shot was blocked and cleared before being put back into the area with a good header from Thiele going just over the bar.
A 66 player was booked for an infringement on Lang, just inside the D. D Tucker’s free kick was thumped home, 1-4. Delightful play from J Tucker saw him go past a defender, shield the ball before laying a pass off to Garner whose cross was met with Thiele’s header cleared.
A rare 66 attack straight down the middle and the ball was knocked past Hurt for 2-4. The second goal gave 66 more confidence but the Bees were defending stoutly and playing neat, patient football. Garner’s pass down the line found J Tucker who advanced and crossed for Thiele. It looked like he had lost out to the keeper but his pluckiness took him past the keeper but his cross was knocked out for a corner. The Bees played out the remainder of the match comfortably.
Joint Man of the Match: James Hurt and Joe Merchant.
Beesands next match is away to Paignton Villa tomorrow at 2.30 pm. All are welcome to come and support the Bees.
