This week’s match against Matlock Ladies represented a major step forward for the Belper Ladies for which they, and their coaches, deserve much credit.
There was a much improved technique in their scrummaging from the forwards, tremendous defensive tackling to keep out their opponents by forwards and backs alike, some good running in attack, good ground made by kicking to touch when penalties were awarded (not often enough with the high tackles that made by the Matlock Ladies!), and the icing on the cake, - the team’s first try. Indeed with just a little more breeze behind the ball there would have been a first conversion to celebrate as well!
As the team will know not everything went perfectly, BUT, what an improvement from the game against Kesteven Ladies. It would be easy to say, yes but the Kesteven Ladies team were a much larger and more experienced side. That is true but to leave matters there would be unfair on Belper and, in fact, not give a true picture of the progress made by the team in the past couple of weeks.
